A lovely memoir, written in a simplistic style, with sincerity, love and a bit of humor. Bob was abandoned and James found him. Or was it the other way around? James the man falls head over heels for the cat he names Bob. James is a recovering drug addict who lives in a "sheltered accommodation" flat in London and bounces around from spot to spot playing his guitar, singing and panhandling for the few pounds that help keep him afloat. Bob has somehow ended up on a doorstep in James's building injured, half starved, and very much alone. Thus begins a story of kindness, caring, and mutual understanding. The book is a quick read, but a good one. It touches the heart and if one loves animals, especially cats, there is an "uplifting" kind of feeling to it. Nothing terrible happens, and Bob does not die, both very happy things about this story, and as it goes on you realize that the cat is much more of a blessing to the man than anyone could ever hope for. I'm very glad I read it.

This is a quick read. Follows the relationship of a young, semi-homeless recovering drug addict in London and a stray ginger tomcat who become a team. Reinforces, to me, the bond and commitment between a pet and their human. Bob definitely provides love, entertainment, loyalty, and a sense of responsibility which James definitely needed to begin the process of drug independence and getting his life back. Looking forward to reading the follow-up: The World According to Bob.

This is a wonderful true story. If you are cat staff it is a must read. The story is lived out in London. As a American I had to think about a few things. For the most part being staff is the same no matter where you live. We all wish we had a Bob come along In Our lives. maybe you have and should write a book? The story is well done and leaves no stone unturned. I can't wait to read the other two books. You will laugh and be right there on the street with them worried right along with with James.
A great summer read.

I finished this book about a month ago. Usually write a review shortly after completing a book while it's fresh in my mind. This book was an easy read told in a straightforward, well written style. It underscores how the connection between a human and animal can be so meaningful--nd even lifesaving--for the human.

The author, who although young (think he was in his 20s), has already had a hard life of addiction and homelessness. He finds Bob, an injured stray cat, hanging around his apartment building and takes him in. Because of Bob, the author becomes more dedicated to earning enough money to take care of the two of them, and he also finds it easier to ignore the lure of addiction.

James is a street musician struggling to make ends meet.
Bob is a stray cat looking for somewhere warm to sleep.

When James and Bob meet, they forge a never-to-be-forgotten friendship that has been charming readers from Thailand to Turkey.

A Street Cat Named Bob is an international sensation, landing on the bestseller list in England for 52 consecutive weeks and selling in 26 countries around the world.

When street musician James Bowen found an injured cat curled up in the hallway of his apartment building, he had no idea how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London, barely making enough money to feed himself, and the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet James couldn't resist helping the strikingly intelligent but very sick animal, whom he named Bob. He slowly nursed Bob back to health and then sent the cat on his way, imagining that he would never see him again. But Bob had other ideas.

This instant classic about the power of love between man and animal has taken the world by storm and is a perfect gift book for cat lovers.
