Recent edition of 1933 children's classic. Read this to any age audience and they'll all stop and either remember lovingly or sit entranced as they meet Ping for the first time.

This is a cute Childrens book about duckies. Ping misses getting on to the boat with his relatives and works on finding them. A really cute book.

A story set in China from the duckling's point of view about being left behind, almost eaten for dinner, and at last reunited with his family.

I used this with my son's Five in a Row curriculum. My son thought it was ok, I disliked it. They are mean to the duck...is the idea to teach children to go home on time so they aren't beaten? It also has a huge run on sentence towards the end. I know many people consider this a clasic, but I found it annoying. I would skip this one in the Five in a Row curriculum and go straight on to "A Pair of Red Clogs".

When I was born, my great-grandmother wrote a letter to Dear Abby asking for the recommendation of a good story book to read to me. Dear Abby suggested "Ping." I still have the original clipping from the Dallas Morning News!! I remember LOVING to hear the story being read to me. I bought a copy for my kids when they were babies, now that I have a granddaughter of my own, of course I bought it to read to her. I still love the rhythm of the book and its gentle illustrations.

I don't know what parents today would make of its plot, given that there is a "smack" given to the last duck up the ramp at the end of each day. Ping hates the smack, hates that it hurts and hates that it marks him as "last" every day. One day he doesn't go home because he's last and doesn't want the smack. On his own, he encounters adventure, grave danger, makes a friend, and finds his way home again, realizing that smack isn't the worst thing that could happen to a duckling who strays beyond the boundaries.
