I liked Tricks in the first book. She was interesting. She had lived with Dragos group (demesne) for over 200 years after she fled her murdering uncle (who was killed in book 1). With the uncle now deceased, she is the heir to the dark fae throne. Tricks is now known as Niniane and there is someone who wants her dead. Enter Tiago (a thunderbird is his other form) a Wyr soldier to function as her bodyguard and hunt down the one(s) who want her gone.
I was a little disappointed. Tricks isn't the same character as in book 1. The interesting, sassy, self assured individual is gone. Instead she is winy. Oh poor me! I thought Tiago was a little too alpha (bossy and my way or the highway). I did enjoy the other characters and more about this world.
Pia and Dragos book 1. Dragos' sentinals- Graydon, Rune, Bayne, Constantine- all are gryphons. Aryal is a harpy. Carling is the vampire queen, sorceress. Grym is Drago's head of security and a gargoyle.

This book was just as enjoyable as the first. The book is a bit darker then the first one and I liked that about it. Made it more true to real life.

Thea Harrison definitely knows how to write an entertaining book! She creates terrific alpha heroes that still have a vulnerable side, and heroines who know how to hold their own against these guys!

Tiago Black Eagle is a Wyr sentinel who has been worshipped as a war god. He has command over the thunder and lightning, and is a huge, humorless warrior. Ninian "Tricks" Periwinkle is the heir to the Dark Fae throne, but has been in hiding and working as the public relations liason for Dragos's corporation. She is spunky and funny, and has a penchant for shoes. Once her evil father is defeated, Ninian knows that she must accept her rightful seat on the Dark Fae throne. Not everyone in the Dark Fae court agrees with this though, and she narrowly escapes an attempt on her life in Chicago. Tiago arrives to provide her with protection, and what follows is quite an adventure as the tiny Dark Fae heir brings the massive warlord to his knees as they unravel the plot to usurp Ninian's claim to the throne.

I loved Tiago's softer side- which even came as a surprise to him! My favorite scene was when he sent a female detective shopping for Ninian since he knew he wouldn't be able to find the right things to please her, and yet the big, gruff warrior knew the exact things to ask for. Ninian was a bit more difficult for me to like. She seemed quite childish, and her continual doubting of Tiago's love was rather frustrating. I also thought that the ending was a bit clichéd- the culprit behind the plot to usurp the throne was fairly obvious to me. There were also some slow points during the story due to the amount of political info-dumping the author did to advance her series story line. It caused the middle of the story to drag a bit. This story will make much more sense if it is read after reading book one, as it is part of an arcing story line.

This book sat on my bookshelf for a long time, and I could kick myself for waiting so long to read it! I like Ms. Harrison's ability to write funny, snarky dialogue and to create a great chemistry between the characters. I'm going to go back and re-read book one, and then it'll be on to book three!
