In the best tradition of Susan Cooper. This tale set in Wales is a masterful first novel by a prolific and gifted writer for young (at heart) readers. It makes me want to visit Wales and read Welsh history for myself. Her ear for dialogue in academic-speak, kid-speak and Welsh is uncanny. Most successful of all, she captures the language of the heart which needs no translation and connects all generations.
