I have had this book for awhile and finally decided to read it. I normally like Hooper's books, but this book wasn't as good as I had heard it was. I think the ending was a little far-fetched and it wasn't a book that I wanted to just keep reading and reading. It took me awhile to finish because I just wasn't that in to it.

Cassie is a psychic who is hiding from her past and her abilities. However, when a serial killer victimizes the small town in which she has tried to find peace she feels a moral obligation to help local law enforcement in their hunt for the killer.
This book was a little cheesy but enjoyable. From the description I expected a nail-biting thriller, but instead the book focused more on the characters and a developing romance between Cassie and the local judge. The last quarter of the book had a respectable amount of suspense, and a surprise (though perhaps implausible) ending.
The best part of this book was Cassie, the brave but vulnerable protagonist. From the previews of the next two books in the trilogy it appears that she will not be a part of the upcoming stories, which is a shame... she was the best thing about the first one.

Loved, Loved, Loved this book. I have the next few books in this series and if it weren't already after 1 am, I have been up since 5 am and I just read nearly 400 pages of this book, I would be picking up the next book in this series. Outstanding!

Kept me guessing until the last chapter or two - and I'm good at figuring them out! This is the first in the Trilogy of Shadows. It is the first of three sets of trilogies involving Noah Bishop. (That's how many as of summer of '06.) Stealing - Hiding - Out : that's the order. However, they are each stand alone, with the only tie being Noah Bishop. The three books total take place within a year of each other. Check out her website; that explains alot.

The last time Cassie Neill used her psychic abilities, she had been 5 minutes too late in leading the LAPD to a killer. Now, while trying to forget the past, Cassie is drawn into the mind of another psychopath. She can hear his thoughts, but she cannot see his face or pick up his name. And as she goes deeper and deeper into his mind to find the one clue that will identify him, Cassie discovers a frightening truth: he knows who she is.
This is one you won't want to put down until you've read the very last page!

What if you can enter a madman's cruel mind as he plans his vicious crimes? What if you can see the terrified face of his prey as he moves in for the kill--but you can't stop his frenzy once he strikes?
Psychic Cassie Neill helps the L.A. police catch killers--until she makes a terrible mistake and an innocent child dies. Cassie flees to a small North Carolina town, hoping that a quiet life will silence the voices that invade her unwilling mind. But Cassie's abilities know few boundaries. And she's become certain--as no one else can be--that a murderer is stalking Ryan's Bluff.
It's his fury that Cassie senses first, then his foul thoughts and perverse excitement. Yet she doesn't know who he is or where he will strike. The sheriff won't even listen to her--until the first body is found exactly where and how she predicted. Now a suspect herself, she races desperately to unmask the killer in the only way she knows: by entering his twisted mind. Her every step is loaded with fear and uncertainty...because if he senses her within him, he'll trap her there, so deep she'll never find her way out.

Even though psychic Cassie Neill has traveled more than 3,000 miles away from Los Angeles, she finds that she cannot escape her destiny, any more than victims can escape the serial killer stalking the small town of Ryan's Bluff, N.C. Having retreated to an isolated home left to her by an aunt she never met, Cassie thinks she may have found peace at last. Her psychic ability to connect with the minds of killers and to see through their eyes has allowed Cassie to save lives, while all but destroying her own. Ryan's Bluff seems like the perfect hideaway, but it is not long before Cassie is plagued by visions once again. Cassie knows that local officials will be skeptical of her abilities, particularly since her aunt, also a psychic, was considered the town eccentric. So she goes to Judge Ben Ryan for help. When her claims that a murder is about to take place prove true, cynical town sheriff Matt Dunbar grudgingly accepts her help. In spite of occasional stiff dialogue and some clich?d language, Hooper (Haunting Rachel) constructs a fast-paced, suspenseful plot in this first book of her new series. She does a skillful job of making Cassie's psychic abilities seem like fact rather than fiction, explaining carefully how it is that Cassie can enter the mind of a serial killer and how she might get trapped there. And while the budding romance between Cassie and Ben is awkward and their dialogue seems forced, the story's complicated and intriguing twists and turns keep the reader guessing until the chilling ending.

Of all the Kay Hooper books I've read, this was the least interesting and the most predictable. I didn't really like the "heroine" and many of the characters in this book felt "flat" to me. It was a quick read and not a bad way to spend a few hours, but not Hooper's best work.
