Colonel Starling joined the White House Secret Service detail during Woodrow Wilson's first term and remained through Franklin D. Roosevelt's third. His record as personal bodyguard to Wilson won hi the position as head of the Detail, and in that capacity, he found himself in daily contact with five successive presidents....Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, and Roosevelt.

To serve so closely with five such different ment required human understanding as well as professional skill. No harm ever came to any President under Colonel Starling's charge. More remarkable still, Colonel Starling won the friendship and respect of all of them. This is his story.
