When Tony Hillerman died, I thought, "What a shame, that's the end of those wonderful Navajo police stories." It wasn't until much later I saw a title in my PBS Daily Digest with Anne Hillerman's name. Quite often, when an author with good sales dies, a relative or another writer will take over to continue the series, often with poor results. So I read her first novel about the Navajo police with mixed expectations. It was good, plus the following novels kept improving. And I think as Anne Hillerman continued this series she made the people even more human than her father did.
This one was exceptionally good, as it had even more human drama. However, I didn't like the fact that the suspect whom I felt had the perfect motive to kill the victim ended up not being the killer. :-)
