Cherijo Grey Veil is a brilliant Terran surgeon who discovers something about her father that causes her to run away and take an assignment at a free clinic light years away from his influence in Kevarzangia Two. Because of the racism of the Terrans and her sheltered life in Terra, Cherijo has never met many aliens before. Let alone treat them. This is the first book in a series, but the story felt self contained - no giant cliffhanger, thank goodness. And while this is a science fiction novel, it wasn't hard science fiction, which made it a fun, satisfying read for me. There were no difficult lessons, just a straight story about a young woman's fight for her independence. I think I've found an author who I can expect page-turning and fun science fiction from.

I really loved this book! This was the first in this series that I have ever read and would love to read the next one if I can find it! The lead female character is a strong woman and the plots are intertaining.

I did think that the book quit rather than ended, but it is the start of a series, so I guess that was the point.

Great book! If you like McCaffrey or Moon sci fi then this should interest you. Dr. Veil becomes an off-world physician to get away from her father and his atrocious behavior. She ends up falling in love with an alien, fighting the attention of another man, and coping with several medical emergiencies of the alien populations.

A nice light sci-fi romp.
Fast, easy reading and lots of fun!
This is a rather hard to describe science fiction book. Some parts are lighthearted. Others are rather grim (plague with threat of planetary extinction, for example).
Cherijo is an experienced surgeon from Earth who goes to another planet to practice medicine on non-Humans in an attempt to escape from her controlling father. She falls in love with an alien at first sight, performs surgery on species of which she has no knowledge, is emotionally very immature (result of controlling father?), and has little impulse control. Meanwhile, her father is willing to start an interplanetary war to get her to come home again.

This book was my first 'taste' of the Stardoc series and I was pleasantly surprised. The plot centers around a female human doctor who escapes her very controlling father by taking a contract on a distant planet that is home to both human colonists and a great diversity of alien species. She is up against the usual kinds of 'newbie on the block' problems, but that's where the similarity to a space opera ends. There are several plot twists, along with a liberal dusting of humor, and both kept my interest and made it a delightful read.
Being a Science Fiction fan when I saw my wife reading these books I figured I'd give them a chance and I'm glad I did. S.L. Viehl introduces a realistic future of medical science interspersed with science fiction's alien races and the works. It's written in 1st person and that normally jars me but it's written so well that I got past it quickly. Cherijo quickly becomes a very likable character who is caught up in a universe of troubles that eventually lead back to her crazy father. Veihl creates wonderfully complex alien races and draws you in from page one til the end. I devoured this series pretty quickly and after a few books I typically loose interest in a series but not Stardoc. I HIGHLY recommend for Science Fiction fans and Romance fans, and it's not only for girls. Give it a chance guys you'll love it.
The first in the excellent space opera saga by Viehl.
I plan to continue reading this series. Not for the military sci-fi crowd, but more for those who like alien characters.

reminded me of the first walk into an intergalactic bar
in 'Star Wars'.
I have managed to find another of this series, the
fifth. I hope to find them all. These are engrossing
stories that hold one's interest from first to last. I
only wish they were more readily available.
