This is Shatner's version of how Kirk and Spock met and joined Starfleet. This is a fantastic book. William Shatner has proven that he is one of the best Star Trek writers out there (along with Peter David). He just gets the characters and his books infuse a lot of fun, action and great dialogue into the story.

It's tough, though, not to think of Chris Pine as Kirk and Zach Quinto as Spock when reading this book. It's inevitable as the characters are similar and it just has the "feel" to it.

If you enjoy Star Trek books, get this. You will not regret it. Then start reading some of Shatner's other Star Trek novels like The Return and his Mirror Universe Saga (starts with The Spectre).
