Robin V. reviewed The Spy and the Traitor: The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War on + 17 more book reviews
A spine tingling true story of cold war espionage and double agents, some motivated by ideological beliefs, some by greed.

This book is at once a thrilling spy story and a quiet study of how ordinary people get into that kind of situation and find themselves in over their heads before they really know it, in a world where the cold war and covert warfare are a way of life. I had heard these names in the news but I never knew the backstory. This is history not as stats & facts but real people's experiences. I think it's the best of McIntryre's books. Well worth the time of anybody curious about "the way things were."
