Not a pleasant reading experience. The prose is brutal - about poverty, hardship, fleeting opportunity, self-doubt, backbreaking work, racism and bullying, hunger...

I found the book depressing and wish the author had written more about the spiritual and cultural significance of the run. The title says "stolen land," but there's little about that in the book. Instead it's mostly about the author's deprivation and fears.
