This is a forgotten, yet interesting tale of Southern Africa. As in many of his African tales, the thirst for long forgotten gold plays a central issue. Psychological terror pervades most of the novel as Benita and her aging father are gradually brought under the spell of her father's partner: in the end, a raving madman. Neither as bloodthirsty as other of his novels, nor as fantastic in the resting place of the ancient wealth, it still has much of the charm of King Solomon's Mines, and the She Who Must Be Obeyed sagas. As this has rarely been reprinted, read it if you find a copy.
