Mark Rubin, a wealthy furrier, is looking for his wife, Natalie, and his 3 children. The police wont help because the couple remains married and Natalie has the right to move her kids without his permission. So Mark hires Baltimore PI, Tess Monaghan.
Mark is an Orthodox Jew who married a gorgeous woman 12 years his junior. They have an incredible home; Natalie has credit cards for the shores where she shops. Mark is a controlling man and rather sharp in his business practices. He also neglects to tell Tess critical details that might help her find his family. Tess is aided by the fact that the oldest son, Isaac, is trying to contact his father.
Natalie has run off with Zeke, an ex-con. They make ends meet by robbing banks and welfare fraud. Tess has joined an Internet PI group of women called the Snoop Sisters. They brainstorm solutions and are the legs (to tend to matters) in their locale (spread over the US). Tess sends them photos of the children and Natalie.
I found this to be one of Lippmans best stories; it is a page-turner with mounting suspense. The plot races to a stunning conclusion.
