This is book 8 in the series. I just love these time travel romance novels. KMM takes me back to a time when romance novels where more descriptive and sexual. In fact I even recently received Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon and can't wait to read it as I was told this is very similar to KMM.
The story into which Spell of the Highlander is embedded is fascinating. It is a story that spans KMM's Highlander series, and leads into her brand new 'Fever' series. The book is worth reading just to understand key elements of this overall epic! In fact it is a must have.
Cian is a powerful Druid, and there are reasons to believe that his time being trapped in the mirror was by design, to bring him forward, with his kinsmen, also trapped in the 21st century from the 16th century, to fight an epic battle that is still to come in the series. But the fun part is watching this arrogant former Celtic Laird from the 9th century make adjustments to dealing with a modern woman and modern society. He is an old fashioned man with the manners of a caveman, but also one of the most compelling characters in this genre today. And watching him interact with his kinsmen, protagonists from other books by the same author, is priceless!

I gave this book only 4 stars, but that's the most I would ever give a paranormal romance book. Definitely 5 stars within it's own genre. Writing, characters, plot are all excellent. I hadn't read the other books in the series, but don't think I missed a lot because as far as I could tell previous characters did not appear until the last 1/4 of the book. The book is a satisfying read on it's own as it does not end in cliffhangers like the author's Darkfever series. Entertaining. Sexy!

This is a great book, I got it on a whim and was so glad I did. It is a series of books dealing with magic and highlanders and the women they meet. The story lines are amazing and the characters are well-developed. The sex is so fantastic. I love a good story and even better with some great fantastic drawn out sex. So, if are secretly wishing for a man who knows what he wants and demands it, then you had better get yourself hooked onto this series.

This is the second time now that I've been a bit disappointed with a book in this series. I had really hoped it would be better than the last one (The Immortal Highlander), but it's really just more of the same. The stories just keep going "Oh, no! We have a deadly problem! Let's run to Castle MacKelter!" It's really getting old and it makes me not look forward to the future books that will eventually come out in this series. (As is promised by the author.)

Moning's books have layers, are complex, very heavy and well-researched books! even if you don't like romance, historical romance, or romantic fantasy GET THIS BOOK! you will love her style, skill, and wit!
her books are not only escape worthy, but they leave w/ enough food for your brain to chew on and a lot to talk about!
Men I know look down on women's romance books, but after reading one of her highlander books (like this one) or her Fever series (which is different, yet she tops her skill in this series) (they read these books due to the curiousity of why my friends and I were so into her, her characters, and her message board) they have become hooked! Reading them as quickly as possible and getting involved w/ the characters. If you're iffy about trying her still, then try her book Darkfever (fever series) you cannot go wrong there no matter what you're in too!
also, her books are in audio format! Phil G does the highlander series and the 4th book in the Fever series (with Natalie). His voice is orgasmic!

Another wonderful Highlander book form Ms. Moning, this one features Cian, a tenth-century Druid captured in a dark mirror--and Jessi, who gets saddled with the mirror once the professor who bought it through the black market gets killed. Cian and Jessi haveto get to Scotland as soon as possible, for a deadly sorcerer tails them, and they have numbered days until this evil one gains full power...

Finally! One of Moning's heroines who isn't a petite blond! While still petite, at least Jessi has short curly black hair :)
The Highlander romance novels are getting formulaic, true. And yes, we do always run off to Castle MacKeltar when something needs solving. BUT Ms. Moning is leading up to a larger epic event in both her Highlander romance novels and her Fever paranormal-mystery series.
If you are addicted to the Fever series and you haven't read these romances, you should. Cian & Jessi's story is the closest tie of all the romance novels to the events that happen in Mac's Fever adventures. The Druids, the Seelie and Unseelie Hallows, Adam Black, the villain Darroc, etc. all have their beginnings in these romance novels.
Yes they are a bit formulaic, yes all the men are gentle barbarians wielding magic, BUT yes, you should read them. (and yes, my boyfriend makes fun of me for the covers of these things...)

I loved this book. The entire series is amazing. I'm not into time travel books, but this series made me think twice. The author created a series that linked the stories without creating a carbon copy each time. I've read some series that the stories were too a like. Not here. They are very different stories, but seems to be able to relate them in an interesting way. I can't wait to read more of her books.

I normally don't read time travel or Highlander books, but I make an exception for KMM's books. How can you go wrong with a six and a half feet, all alpha male Druid Highlander? I loved Cian's character although he came off as such a cave man. He has so many super powers that it's hard to keep track of them all. What I didn't like? The heroine. She's getting her Ph.D, but is quite juvenile at times. One of my pet peeves is the nearly 30 year old beautiful modern heroine who doesn't know she's beautiful and is still a virgin. Why are there so many of these in KMM's Highlander series? Why is it ok for the man to be this sex god alpha male who has bedded many women, but the woman is an innocent 21st century virgin? Such a double standard.
The romance was ok. There are some steamy sections, but I read this book and the others in KMM's Highlander series to learn more about the Fae because I love her other (Fever) series. It was good to see more information about the Seelie, Unseelie, Druids, and the Fae. This is not the best book to get started on the Highlander series. The character development and romance are far better in her earlier Highlander series books.

Another great Highlander book by Moning! This installment focused on Cian MacKelter and Jessi St James - he is a Druid that got trapped in an Unseelie mirror centuries ago, and she is a grad student trying to get her archaeology degree. The story focuses on him trying to free of the mirror as well as their budding romance. There is more intrigue and action in this story - you find out more about faery - the Seelie and Unseelie. There is more of a plot line that brings together all of the Highlander books - Cian and Jessi come together with the other MacKelters (Drustan and Dageus) to battle an enemy who not only holds the key to Cian's freedom - but also to information about several Unseelie artifacts that could be detrimental to humanity if in the wrong hands.
With each Highlander book - I think to myself - wow that was my favorite one - and then I read another and another and think the same thing for each. A great series that will keep you captivated and up until all hours trying to finish to find out what happens. I highly recommend the book and series!

Liked this one. Not as great as some of the others in the series, but still worth the read.
Cian is a powerful Druid from the 9th century who has been stuck in a mirror (snickers) for the past century. When he meets Jessi St. James, a 24 year old going for her PhD, he swears to protect her from the people who would try to kill her because she's seen the mirror (and the man inside). They return to the motherland and meet up with Dageus, Drustran, Chloe, and Gwen at Castle Keltar and the story unfolds from there.
Overall, the plot was a bit slow for me, but still held my interest with the great characters of Jessi and Cian.

Clever, good romance and sensuality. I started these because I liked the Fae series. Moning is a clever writer.
I read this book several times and was fascinated each time I read it. Definitely something to keep you warm on a winter's night.
Spell of the Highlander is one of my favorite in the series. It is a little darker than the others, and intertwines present day, thus not back in old Scotland. Cian may be my favorite Highlander yet. If you are a fan of Karen Marie Moning's other series you see how more othe charcters tie togheter and start figuring out some of the underlaning plot in that series as well. A good read.

The characters of Cian and Jessi and their story is amazing. Wonderful to revisit MacKeltar castle, Drustan, Gwen, Dageus and Chloe. I so enjoy the way Moning doesn't fall into the series formula so many romance authors seem to follow. Each novel has unique romances, dangers and villains. Although we assume all will work out for the hero and heroin, the getting there is never boring.
