It is always a delight to spend time with Flavia, her family, and her community. I fully agree with the Boston Globe reviewer who described Flavia as a cross between Eloise and Sherlock Holmes. What amazes me about the writing is that although it is told from Flavia's point of view, you are still able to "get" the undercurrents between adults that don't make sense to her as a 12 year old. The only frustration with this book is the enormity of the cliffhanger and the wait we'll have to endure until the next book comes out.

" Eleven-year-old amateur detective and ardent chemist Flavia de Luce is used to digging up clues, whether theyre found among the potions in her laboratory or between the pages of her insufferable sisters diaries. What she is not accustomed to is digging up bodies. Upon the five-hundredth anniversary of St. Tancreds death, the English hamlet of Bishops Lacey is busily preparing to open its patron saints tomb. Nobody is more excited to peek inside the crypt than Flavia, yet what she finds will halt the proceedings dead in their tracks: the body of Mr. Collicutt, the church organist, his face grotesquely and inexplicably masked. Who held a vendetta against Mr. Collicutt, and why would they hide him in such a sacred resting place? The irrepressible Flavia decides to find out. And what she unearths will prove theres never such thing as an open-and-shut case."

This was such a pleasure to read that I slowed down my reading just so I wouldn't finish too soon! Not only did I NOT WANT the story to end but I immediately went out and found/bought all the other Flavia books by this author. Flavia is not only smart she speaks her mind as she wants, is more than clever --- and, made me laugh out loud so many times! A GREAT READ!!!!

Fifth in the series with Flavia de Luce, an 11-yr-old minor prodigy in 1950s England. When she hears the church of St. Tancred is going to dig up its patron saint, Flavia is determined to be in on the action. And so she is, tumbling into the crypt only to find the corpse of the missing organist. How did he get there, and why? This is tailor-made for Flavia's investigative talents and expertise in chemistry, not to mention her talent for coming home covered in mud. A big event at the end foretells something dramatic for her home, the mansion Buckshaw. I still find Flavia so amusing, combining a child's gullibility with the knowledge of a master chemist, and then of course there is her passion for poisons.
