I couldn't stop reading this book even though I'm not usually into Southern Gothic Horror! I had many mixed feelings because this book throws a lot of things at you. Sure, reviews have talked about Steele Magnolias, but be sure to include Stephen King influences.

A Newcomer comes to town and builds relationships with the Southern Book Club members and their families. As the Newcomer ingratiates himself into their lives, families get out of whack. Patricia tries to take things in hand, but is rebuffed and ridiculed at every step. I definitely wanted to smack her at times. Eventually she succeeds in convincing her book club and they work on slaying vampires. I had a tough time with some graphic scenes, horrible husbands and racism. Still, it kept my interest.

This is a fun and entertaining read. It's nerve wracking, at times, too. I enjoyed it although occasionally it had a bit too much gruesome detail. I certainly recommend it, though.

Made me wistful for the charm that is a Southern Community (at least the good parts of it). A new take on vampire mythology. Shock factor is high.

So I loved everything about this book! First there was the awesome artwork on the dust jacket. Yet, if you take that jacket off, the book is a dazzling green and when you open it up, a lovely peach. Then you turn a page and they are these beautiful drawings of coffins and flowers. I was in love before I even started reading it but read it I did and I was very impressed. The book takes place in the south surrounded by these housewives that decide to start a "not a book club" club. Loved reading about what they were reading about but as soon as the main housewife gets attacked, I'm hooked. I could hardly put the book down and yet there were times the book caused my anxiety level to skyrocket. At those times I had to walk away. Like the husbands' intervention, the attic scene and the finale. It was a good anxiety though. Not too many books that can do that to me. It was fun, it was aggravating, it was suspenseful. Highly recommended!

First off let me say I have a major love hate relationship with this book, but in the best way possible! I am from South Carolina so most of this book was like going back to my childhood and made reading it that much better for me. I was able to relate to it on another level than most. Sadly some parts that I could relate to I wish I couldn't. Let me explain... the men in this book think the women are only good for one thing and that is raising babies and keeping the house... unfortunately in some parts of the south this is still true. I grew up seeing this , not in my own family but in people around me. I also grew up seeing racism worse than it was shown in this book, it gave a small glimpse in a flashback but to be honest racism is unfortunately alive and rampant in the south which is part of the reason my husband and I moved away. We chose to raise our daughter somewhere that people were treated better.. its not perfect here in Indiana but it is better. So anyway, reading how the men degraded the women really bothered me but it was necessary for the story and it was truthful for the time. Now for the rest of the story... I loved loved it all !! It had me up all night reading and took over my days. The suspense and mystery were so good and kept me wanting more. The vampire had me loving and hating him throughout this story and the entire time I was rooting for Patricia. Patricia has to be the strongest mama bear I have ever seen! Don't mess with her! This is by far one of the best vampire stories I have read and I cannot wait to read more from this author!

Spoiler warning. Kind of boring. It's not really the club but just one of the women from the club that the book mainly follows. The "vampire" is not really that threatening, and I'm not really sure I'd consider him a vampire.

The MC catches the bad guy in the act and never really pushes that hard to get rid of him because the men folk have money tied up in investments with him, so she just really doesn't do much until her daughter is being attacked, THEN the book club dispatches him in one night while the men folk are watching football.
