Adam and Eliza had a story-line in the previous book (she dies and Adam is called to remake her into a GIM, but doesn't because he recognizes his soulmate. He's been waiting 700 years. So, instead of wooing her and giving her a choice, he chains her to him. She is rescued by Thorne and Sin. Since Adam's soulmate didn't accept him, he now belongs to Mab). Soulbound picks up right where Evernight left off.
I really didn't like Adam in Evernight. However, in this book, his and Eliza's roles are reversed and Eliza must save/free him. Adam's backstory is fleshed out and more is learned about him. The same goes for Eliza. Eliza is mixed race (besides being part fae) and being chained by Adam in the previous book reminiscent of part of her heritage (grandfather was a slave). I was interested in learning what sort of fae creature Eliza was.
Sin's story is furthered here too and his is next.

This is the sixth book in the Darkest London series and tells the story of Eliza May and Adam. I have never liked Adam as a character but I ended up enjoying this book. Callihan does an excellent job of making you sympathetic to Adam and tying the whole thing in with the overall story of the GIM.
In the last book Eliza escaped her binding to Adam and was rescued by her fae aunt Mab. Eliza is living with the Fae and enjoying her time there but she is leery of the cruelty of the Fae. As Eliza unravels the secrets of the Fae she realizes she needs to leave court as soon as possible. When she finds Adam has been held prisoner and tortured there she decides to pair her flight with his rescue. They both need to figure out a way to work together or the fate of the GIM (ghosts in the machine) looks grim.
I have always enjoyed the idea of the GIM (ghost of the machine); people who have died but whose souls are tied back to their bodies by a clockwork heart. This book deals with the origin of the GIM and we learn a lot more about how they came to be.
We also learn a lot more about the Fae and spend more time in their court. The Fae have started featuring more and more in this series and I have really enjoyed that. Additionally, this book starts the story of Sin and Miss Layla Starling, which I assume will be the next couple featured in this series.
The above being said this book is primarily a romance with some paranormal and steampunk elements. Eliza is Adams soul mate, but he forced her to stay with him initially by physcially binding her to him. Eliza only wants freedom. The two struggle with each other a bit; they are attracted to each other but Eliza resents (rightfully so) Adams past treatment of her. Its a well done romance and the characters have excellent chemistry together.
Overall this was a wonderful read. This is primarily a romance with some paranormal and steampunk elements; I dont read a ton of romance but I really do enjoy this series. There is romance here, but there is also a really interesting world and storyline. I would definitely recommend to fans of paranormal or steampunk romance. This series reminds a lot of Bec McMasters Steampunk Londoner series; so I would recommend that series as well if you enjoy this kind of book.
