This fifth book in the Ranger's Apprentice series skips a few years ahead, to Will's first solo assignment. But routine problems with bigmouths and Skandians in his small fief are shoved aside when he receives a new mission. An important border fortress to the north is in danger. After its ruler falls ill, rumors have begun to the effect that an evil sorcerer is plotting their downfall. Will has to go undercover, with practically no help, and try to unravel the truth from all the deception...

This book just flew by, and the ending leaves you hanging for book 6. I loved it! Highly recommended!
