What a good read this was. When I picked up this book I really wasn't sure what to expect, I had heard good things about the author, but honestly my expectations were not that high. It was one of those books that in the beginning I thought to myself, "This is moving too slow ... I'm not sure I'll enjoy this .... why bother reading...", but something about it kept me moving through it. I was enjoying it without realizing it, nothing like some stealth enjoyment. When the realization hit me about a 3rd of the way in that I was actually enjoying this and had been from the get go, I plowed through the rest and couldn't put it down.
What was it about this book that I enjoyed so much? Just the pure story telling that goes on. Guy Burt can tell a story. He can draw you in, make you feel for the characters, make you feel like you're watching the story unfold from afar. I really can't tell too much of the plot without giving it all away, but let's just say that you'll think you'll have it figured out, find out you're wrong, then figure it out again and once more realize you're wrong, then finally get a grasp of how it all plays out and think that you're right, but then realize you're wrong once more. Great stuff. If you enjoy the psychological thriller genre or if you enjoy any genre as long as it's a good read, go out and get this book.

Jumps from past to present non stop. Kind of weird....
Interesting and unusual horror/thriller novel. Follows the disturbed lives of a brother and sister to a shattering climax.
Decided to read this book after having seen the movie "The Hole", another story by Guy Burt. I loved it! Keeps you in suspense to the very end. Hard book to put down. Looking forward to reading "After the Hole" and "Clock Without Hands".
One very odd book. Its a psychological thriller. Hard to understand what is going on at times, but the end was quite a surprise. I do recommend the book. Would make a great movie, unless it already is and Im not aware of it.
Sophie and Matthew were raised by a distant father and a cold mother. Sophie is a real genius who hides the fact so that she appears 'normal'. Matthew is her younger brother who dotes on his sister without question.
As a lot of books start .. it was a dark and stormy night. Candles are placed here and there. Matthew is pacing back and forth. Sophie is bound to a chair. So begins a story of the siblings.... and the questions that Matthew has about his upbringing... secrets that have never been uncovered.
This is a psychological thriller of the best kind for me. I did not see the ending coming. This was a new author for me and I will surely be looking for The Hole. I've seen a lot of reviews for this one ... mostly not too favorable. I really like it when the ending jumps up off the page and grabs me. I give it 5 stars for that alone.
