This was a very moving book. There is so little I knew about WW2, how communism came about in China, the defeat of Japan, and the raw brutality of the Japanese army. I have been changed by reading about the characters presented in this book and the follow up search through history. The text is extremely well written and vivid. So often I found myself thinking, "yes, that is it exactly". Pono from the Shark Dialogues even makes an appearance which surprised me.
