At good girl Rachel White's thirtieth birthday party, thrown by her longtime best friend Darcy Rhone, she gets a little too drunk and somehow ends up sleeping with Dex Thaler, Darcy's fiance. After one day of not having any regrets, Rachel feels incredibly guilty for what she's done to her best friend.
However, it's not like Darcy doesn't deserve some of it. Rachel has always played the loyal companion to Darcy's beautiful, popular, flirtatious, selfish self. Too many times since elementary school, Darcy has stepped over Rachel, made her feel inferior, made insensitive comments. Of course there have been moments when Darcy was loyal to Rachel in the face of mean classmates, but Rachel is slowly beginning to see that their friendship is far from being balanced and healthy.
Rachel feels caught between loyalty to Darcy and her growing love for Dex, who admits that she's the only girl for her. A part of her wants to retain her image as the passive good friend who always puts Darcy's interests ahead of her own, but a part of her realizes that she deserves happiness. What she decides to do may make her the happiest she's ever been, but she may also lose something precious as well.
The first good thing I noticed about this novel from the very first page was that it's written in a very accessible language, almost as if a close friend of yours is telling you her story. And it gets better from there. Emily Giffin writes with amazing skill and knowledge of humans and their relationships with themselves and others around them.

This book was entertaining, and I did enjoy it... but I just kept getting very irritated at Rachel for dragging it out so long. I also found it really hard to feel like I was on anybody's side in this book; I simply wanted everything to be out in the open so they could hurry up and resolve it all. But maybe it's just because I couldn't live with that kind of guilt for as long as Rachel did...
At any rate, while I'd recommend other books over this one, it wasn't bad.

I liked the love story, and thought Rachel and Dex made a great couple. BUT, the fact that the main characters in this book ALL betrayed each other in some way, not only makes it a bit unbelievable, but is wrong to me on a moral level. I don't think someone like Rachel would ever have an affair with her best friends fiance. I may have added a star to my rating, but there was more bad language than I thought there needed to be. I also think that the book went on and on about Rachel's struggle with her conscience and friendship with Darcy VS her heart and relationship with Dex. I wasn't as interested in the story as much as I was interested in how it all would end up. Honestly, that was the best part. . .how do you make a "happily ever after" out of a plot of such betrayal? I think she did a pretty good job with the ending. It wasn't as far-fetched as some of the other points in the book. All in all - just OK, not something I would read over and over again.

This was a great book! The main character is completely likeable even though she's doing an awful thing. The flawed characters really make this an enjoyable read because you can sometimes relate - these are "real life" emotions and situations instead of being something out of a fairy tale. This was a very quick read for me. This was the first book I've read from Emily Giffin and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more!

I wasn't sure I'd like this at first based on the premise. But you're really rooting for the main character, Rachel, throughout. It's a great story and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, Something Blue. I read this whole book from a Saturday to a Monday!

The story is entertaining and makes you feel all the character's feelings. I actually read the sequel to this book prior to reading this book. You could read one without the other but it is nice to see how Darcy felt during the fling.

I had few expectations when I started this book. I am not usually a fan of "chick lit" and was a tad skeptical about how much I would like the book, believing the genre to be inferior to literary fiction. Ultimately I was pleasantly surprised. Griffin's prose is impressive, and I am not ordinarily the kind of snob who notices such a thing. It'll suffice to say, though, that this read like a classy novel, not a trashy dime store paperback.
The main characters are believable people, each possessing a real and memorable back story. The friendship between the protagonist and the semi-antagonist is dynamic, and I found the romance between the protagonist and the love interest touching and realistic, not sappy or unbelievable.
My only problem with the book was that it, like many "chick flicks" and "chick lit" books and other media aimed at "chicks", is based in NYC about a group of white upper class professionals who drink martinis every night until 3am, summer in the Hamptons, and buy ridiculous shoes. The narrator even derides her home-town friends from Indiana for marrying "at the ripe old age of 23." She implies that one could not know anything about love if that person is in his or her early 20s and lives in a small town, but that she, a 30 year old single woman in Manhattan, somehow does has a better life than those whom she turns up her nose at.
I understand that Griffin lived in NYC, and that it is her prerogative to write about whatever setting pleases her, but I am sick to death of the notion that NYC is the center of the universe. This was truly the only flaw I found in the book, and it honestly was not so noticeable that I liked the book any less for it. However, if you take issue with the NYC obsession that is omnipresent in the entertainment world, you may be irritated with Griffin's continuation of the trend.
Overall an enjoyable, quick read. It won't crack my favorites list, but I am glad that I ordered it and would recommend to anyone -- chick or dude.

This book starts off at Rachel's 30th birthday party, where she ends up staying out with her best friend's fiance and then sleeps with him. I tend to really dislike books where the main characters are cheating, but this book was so well written I ended up siding with Rachel and Dex! Amazing! Darcy (Rachel's best friend) seems to be an awful and really selfish person who takes everyone around her for granted, but initially Rachel is horrified with what she has done. Eventually Rachel realizes that she has real feelings for Dex. I spent half the book on edge, wondering when they were going to let Darcy know what had happened, while getting sucked into the drama of hiding the affair and everything else that was happening in the months before the wedding.. I thought it was a really true portrayal of friendships and their basis on trust and mutual respect.. there was a lot of food for thought.

Loved it! It was funny, easy reading. I'm not sure that falling in love with your best friend's fiance is an acceptable thing, but it does happen and it all turned out well in this case. I'm looking forward to reading the next book "Something Blue".

Rachel and Darcy have been best friends since their childhood in Indiana. Now they are both living in NYC and Rachel has just turned 30...and also just slept with Darcy's fiance. When I first started reading peoples reviews, I couldn't believe how they all rooted for Rachel and Dex...but after getting deeper and deeper into the book, I was doing the same thing! I actually grew to despise Darcy. She was so incredibly immature for a woman of 29 yrs. How Rachel managed to stay friends with her all that time was beyond me, but I loved the character of Rachel.
The ins and outs of the complications of love.

I enjoyed reading it, but it did not live up to the hype. I found the characters in the book to be a little grating. I thought the story was kind of shallow. I felt a little sad and depressed after reading this book. I thought the main character was a little bit depressing and her love interest made me annoyed by his unwillingness to break it off with his fiance. Don't even get me started on the best friend.

Wonderful and believable story. I enjoyed this book. I read it in one sitting. I got it thinking it was just another chick-lit story but it was more enjoyable than your typical beach book. Emily Giffin writes well. Not many books of this genre capture the mood and atmosphere of a law school but Emily managed to do it. This made me almost nostalgic for my own law school days and not many books do that! :)
Rachel is a lawyer in a big NYC firm. She is smart, sweet, attractive, and likeable but she has never felt quite as beautiful, charming, or confident as her lifelong best friend, Darcy. Darcy is the poster child for passive-agressive behavior. From the time they were children, Darcy has tried to one-up Rachel. After her 30th birthday party, Rachel ends up sleeping with Darcy's fiancee, Dex, who is Rachel's law school friend and the story takes a life of its own from there.

Summer reading, for me, should be light, fun, and not involve too much brainpower. This book exceeded my standard for this type of literature. Giffin's writing style is breezy and conversational; I really felt like I got to be friends with Rachel watching her story unfold. I think most women are inclined to revile "the other woman," but seeing the situation from Rachel's point of view it's hard NOT to hope she succeeds in stealing her best friend's fiancé.
Overall, though, this is a story about how Rachel, like so many people, self-sabotages herself because she doesn't believe she deserves all the things she dreams of. I honestly felt bad for her, she seemed like a fish out of water at her job, in her current city, hanging out with her best friend Darcy, in all her previous relationships, even with her own family.
I did enjoy this book very much and am eager to read _Something Blue_, which picks up from Darcy's viewpoint and deals with the aftermath of this book.

I would have given up after the first couple of chapters, had this book not been highly recommended. I simply don't get all the positive reviews! There wasn't one character worth rooting for. The main characters were shallow and narcissistic. A colossal waste of 336 pages, and several hours of my time.

I loved this book!I did not expect to like it, be entertained by it, or even be slightly amused by it. What a pleasant surprise! Rachel is a wonderful main character! Normally, I would never even want to indulge in a novel of such "bitchy deception" as I expected it to be. Instead it was a book of love, looking for love, friendship, and the problems of friendship. The book was given to me...that's why I even chose to attempt to read it, and I'm so glad I did! I read it while on vacation. It's a great beach read! I can't wait to read "Something Blue" to hear the other side of the story. Sometimes we can be very entertained by books that we would never dream we would like!

This book was truly hard for me to put down. The story was believable and flowed so nicely, I felt like I was reading a true story about real people. The plot was intricate - having an affair with her best friend's fiance - and full of mixed feelings. How on earth will this end? Will he dump her or her best friend? It held my interest and was a fun read! I would recommend it to anybody who gets bored easily - this will hold your interest!

The plot device I hate above all others when I read is infidelity. I put off reading this book for a very long time because of that. When I began reading the book, I was prepared to hate Rachel on sight and judge her as selfish and slutty. What kind of woman would sleep with her best friends fiancé? Especially when that woman is also the maiden of honor in the wedding? So, filled with my self-righteous anger and indignation, I began reading this book. And did a complete 180.
Kudos to Ms. Giffin for taking a very difficult situation for anyone to be in and making the perpetrators sympathetic. The story is told completely from Rachels point of view. I found myself sympathizing with Rachel; the situation she finds her self in, struggling with trying to make the right decisions, and not wanting to hurt Darcy, though Darcy comes off as a very spoiled and manipulative brat.
Rachel and Dex are very likeable characters. They have known each other since law school and Rachel is the one who introduced Dex to Darcy. They dont plan on sleeping together and afterward try to make the best of an awkward situation. They dont plan on falling in love and with the wedding looming over their heads, I was in constant suspense as to what Dex was going to do. Rachels anxiety over the situation was very believable and well written. I was on the edge of my seat hoping that Dex wouldnt turn out to be someone just looking to score before taking the leap. Rachel is someone who has lived in Darcys shadow since they were children and I had to admire her strength of spirit in wanting to hold on with both hands the unexpected love she has found with Dex.
With each trip down memory lane, my loyalty and sympathy for Rachel increased as we are shown how spoiled and calculating Darcy has been. Various supporting characters from their past and present also enriched the story for me.
I especially enjoyed the final showdown, for lack of a better term. It was well written and filled with nail biting tension and major surprises. Im still not liking the infidelity plot device, but I can understand that, as in all things in life, its not all black or white. Im looking forward to the follow-up, Something Blue, to see if Darcy has any redeeming qualities at all.

What is really interesting about this book is that while normally you wouldn't be on Rachel's side while she inadvertedly steals her best friend's fiance, you see everything from Rachel's perspective and it makes complete sense. How the relationship begins, why the relationship thrives and how Rachel's best friend, Darcy, somewhat deserves what happens to her. The ending really makes you think that Darcy is a complete hypocrite however, the other part of this series is from Darcy's perspective. And the events in her eyes. At the end of Something Borrowed are a few chapters from Something Blue (Darcy's perspective) and you can begin to see why Darcy is the way she is. Between the two (I am waiting for Something Blue now) you see the story from both sides and it makes you think and not able to decide who was right and who was wrong (at least from the first few chapters I have read from Something Blue). Its worth the read. It'll make you think differently about situations in your own life and how they always have different sides, which both seem completely justified.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun and mindless beach read!, May 10, 2011
A friend brought this book in for me to read since the movie was about to be released. I don't typically read this genre, but found it to be a mindless, lighthearted and funny story about two "best friends" who are heading into their thirties with marriage on their minds.
Darcy is engaged to Dex, the man that Rachel discovers that she wants for herself. Unfortunately, Darcy is her best friend and Rachel is supposed to be the maid of honor at the upcoming nuptials. What happens when Rachel and Dex hook up and begin an affair?
Sure enough, as is common in a book of this type, the characters are over-the-top stereotypical. Does consummate good girl Rachel deserve Dex because Darcy is such a self absorbed party girl? Hey, there are rules between friends, and one of the primary girlfriend rules is that you don't go after your best friend's boyfriend (fiance, husband, whatever). Despite the fact that this behavior is reprehensible, the novel is fast paced and entertaining. The reader may or may not root for a happy ending for all.
Definitely one to take to the beach.

Hmmm...I'm not sure about this one. If this book was supposed to read like a huge justification and the reader isn't supposed to side with anyone then it's very well done.
But if I was supposed to sympathize with Rachel and the man whom she all of a sudden decides she loves a few years too late and who is also engaged to her "horrible" best friend then this book really missed the mark for me.

I loved this book!!!! I was cheering for Rachel and Dex throughout the whole book! If you lov chic lit stlye writing, you are going to fall in love with it!

Chicklit about a woman who has an affair with her overbearing best friend's fiancee. The Best Friend comes perilously close to caricature as the manipulative, self-centered golden girl who always gets exactly what she wants, and The Guy comes off as a wimp when he drags his feet about breaking off the engagement.

I don't normally like 'chick lit', but I did really enjoy this one. The story grabbed me and I couldn't put the book down. I had to keep going to find out what happened next. The follow-up 'Something Blue' is really good as well. You should have it on hand to read as soon as this one is done!

Its probably wrong to like a book where the maid of honor and brides lifelong friend falls for and has an affair with the groom. But like it I did.
Rachel and Darcy have been friends for more than 20 years. On the night of her 30th birthday Rachel has a little too much to drink and sleeps with Dex, Darcys fiancé and Rachels good friend of many years. Trying to forget the one night stand and go ahead with their lives, Rachel and Dex realize that their feelings for each other may run very deep and some difficult choices may have to be made.
Although the premise sounds rather tawdry, the book is well written and very funny. The main attraction is the authors depiction of the many ups and downs of friendships. She paints a fairly honest picture of NY dating life and working life. The characters are well drawn, even the secondary ones. There is a sequel to the book called Something Blue, that focuses on another of the characters in this book, and I am looking forward to reading it. There are enough characters here that I would like reading about that she can probably do a few more books on this group of friends.

This is the first in the series of 3 books: Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Baby Proof. You definitely learn to hate the villian in this story and side with the main character. It was a good read.

Kind of a sad story about a lifelong friendship between two girls who part ways over a fiance. The second book in this series apparently explores "the other side of the story". I couldn't put this down. The psychology of the friendship, the personalities of each girl and the flaws they each bring to the friendship was so interesting. I'll definitely read the next story.

This is an utterly charming read that you can't put down. It is a modern captivating and engrossing love story with alot of complications and twists that keep you riveted until the end. Maybe for some people this book was too simplistic of an idea for chick lit, but I still enjoyed the story & characters. I would have read this entire book in a day if I'd had the time to finish it. It was a page turner for me & I kept wondering what was going to happen next. Although the story was perhaps a bit far-fetched in some ways, the story was written in such a way that it was hard to put the book down.
This was my first book to read by Emily Giffin. I give it 5 stars & I am currently reading the second book in the series, Something Blue.

I really liked this book. It was a nice change of pace story about the "underdog" girl in a friendship. It was well written and an easy read. It was perfect for that quiet read on a cold day! Can't wait to read the sequel.

Picked up this book on the way home from a trip. I couldn't put it down! Finished it quickly and went on to read Something Blue soon after. I only wish Emily had more books out there!!
Loved it! Easy read. Catchy, quick story with memorable characters.
I also read the sequel - something blue. I would recommend reading both. The first is from the viewpoint of one friend and the 2nd book is from the viewpoint of the other. Each just as good.
Still on the waiting list for the 3rd.
If you like this... you may also like Valley of the Dolls. I found them similar in style, allow different topics.

A good read! It held my attention the whole way through, which is definitely saying something, since I tend to get bored and not finish books (or take forever to finish them.) I can't wait to read the sequel, "Something Blue"!
This was one of the books I couldn't put down, its an easy book to read... I laugh, cried, and smile while reading this.. This book is better then Something Blue even though this is from Rachels point of view and the other book is from her bestfriend view.

What a boring, annoying book. I didn't like the premise, didn't like any of the characters, and skipped to the end halfway through. Oh, and it wasn't terribly well written either.

I bought this book at a yard sale just on a wem and after reading it I had to purchase the next in the seris something blue!! These were GREAT books... Now on to Baby Proof
As always, Emily Giffin delights in this hard to put down book.
I found myself liking every character in this book and hoping that all lived HEA.
Great book! Fast read - couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read Something Blue - same characters, but from Darcy's point of view. It seems to be a continuation of Something Borrowed.
Great story! Very entertaining, quick read. This is the 2nd of her books that I've read, and I will read more. Fun!
This book was one of my very favorites. I loved it!!! I am so excited to watch the movie. although you know that morally some of the stuff that happens shouldn't be happening you can't help but root for them anyway. LOVED IT!!

I guess I'm just not a fan of a book that celebrates, and rewards, infidelity. While the book is well written, I didn't find any of the characters to be likeable, and I found it difficult to finish. If I didn't have to read this for book club, I probably would have stopped reading it before I finished. However - it is a best-seller, so I imagine some people like it. I'm just not one of those people.
Something Borrowed tells the story of Rachel, a young attorney living and working in Manhattan. Rachel has always been the consummate good girl---until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend, Darcy, throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy's fiancé. Although she wakes up determined to put the one-night fling behind her, Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one guy she should run from. As the September wedding date nears, Rachel knows she has to make a choice. In doing so, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness. Something Borrowed is a phenomenal debut novel that will have you laughing, crying, and calling your best friend.
Read this before Something Blue. This is classic chick lit at it's best that you won't feel bad about reading.
I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Night after night I was compelled to read "just one more chapter" until I finally couldn't keep my eyes open. I was sad when the book ended.
Emily Giffin has written an honest, funny, heart wrenching, page-turner. Not just focusing on falling in love but on the ins and outs of lifetime friends. The truths we see and the flaws we turn a blind eye to. I can't wait to read another book by her.

Great story line. I really cared about the characters! I love Emily's writing style; quick and witty.
Loved it! Emily Giffin always tells a great story with interesting characters.
Something Borrowed was very well written and I was enthralled by the characters to the point that I really couldn't put the book down. However, the character of Rachel was meant to be the protagonist, yet the author seemed to continuously paint her in a poor light. There wasn't a single character in the book that I actually hoped would succeed in the end. The end left me with a poor and bitter taste. There seemed to be a much better way to end it, but the author did not find it.
I think i found my new favorite author. I love this book! Easy to relate since the characters are in their thirties and going through engagements and girlfriend issues. I read this book in days and am eager to order the next one. Easy read!

I am in love with Emily Griffin and can only say how disappointed I am in the fact that I have only read the 3 first so far!! lol.
This book starts off a little rocky because you don't know how to feel towards the main character. Do you like her? Do you hate her because of what she's doing? But, as it turns out, no matter how righteous you seem to think you are, you end up wanting her to get her man in the end!
Griffins' writing is captivating and really draws you to every page.

This book is an easy read. I got through it in less than a week and I'm pretty sure I read the last half in one day. It's quirky and it really makes you understand *gasp* the other woman's point of view.. even if she is sleeping with her best friends fiance.

What I Thought:
This is the first book in a two part series. I adored this book. I devoured it. I think it is so well written; the quality side of chick lit. Quality writing while in a genre that relates to women so well. Although the plot of the story might sound off-putting, I could not believe how much I ended up relating to/ liking the main character. It takes a great writer to make that happen. I highly recommend! If you only have time for two books this summer, read these two (this one and its sequel, Something Blue)theyre great summer reading. The only problem is you wont want to leave your house until youre finished. Just remember that books are transportable and you can take it with you wherever you go!

I'm not usually a fan of books that fall into the so-called "chick lit" category, but this book was a pretty great exception. The main characters all have pretty big flaws - both the female and male lead characters have a serious lack of backbone at times, and the best friend/fiance character is almost entirely unlikable as she is incredibly self-centered (though she is redeemed in the sequel, which is also a great book). Plus, there's the issue of cheating, which is not something that I enjoy reading. Ever. In this case, though, the emotions are so real and believable that they're just about palpable; even as they're acting in less-than-ideal ways, the characters remain root-able (for the most part).
It's not a perfect book, because things get dragged out for way too long, due to the aforementioned spinelessness. Also, I found it difficult to believe that someone as shallow, selfish, and sometimes just plain mean as the best friend/fiance would have friends at all.
All things considered, though, the book is great. You can really feel the characters' emotions, and Giffin's writing style makes for an enjoyable, sometimes heart-string-tugging read.

This book is all about friendship! Everyone thinks they're a good friend, but is that really true? I loved this book because it reminded me of a friend I had in high school. I realized after graduation that our friendship hinged on way too much competition and I decided it wasn't worth the trouble. All in all this book is great Chicklit and a fun read!
I love this book. Perfect beach read!!
I loved the 80's reference in this book as I related better with the main character for that reason...With this is mind though I found the book to be easy to get through and fast reading (a good beach read). Although much like a soap opera I sometimes found myself drifting in thought on the line of "I don't watch soap operas in general on t.v. why am I reading about one?" it still kept me interested enough to finish the book and I will prolly later pick up something blue cause a girlfriend of mine said that the second one is actually better so we shall see. Overall I gave this book 3-1/2 stars out of 5 cause it was easy to read and kept me entertained enough just not as much as i wanted it to.
Love this book!

Chick-lit at its finest! Pulling at one's heartstrings, here's a novel that pushes the envelopes of loyalty and friendship to their limits. Emily Giffin richly draws you into the characters with savvy wit and matter-of-facts detailing genuine life problems. All in all, you are left wanting more of her characters and her. A must read!

I have read a handful of Emily Giffin's books in the past and have never been disappointed. Recently a friend of mine gave me this book which I just finished. I truly loved it and highly recommend it. The plot/storyline and the decisions and choices made by the main characters made me think about my own friendships/relationships which I have had throughout the years. Some of the decisions we make can certainly impact our relationships, yet the value we place on these relationships is what often determines its authenticity. This is a chick-lit story with some doses of life lessons added to the mix. Great book!
Honestly I did not care for this book at all. What she did to a friend is unforgivable, albeit, she was not the greatest person in the world but it's not cool to do that to a friend.

Well I'm still up in the air about this book. I liked it yes but reading it once is enough for me. There were parts of the story that made me not want to put this book down. Then there was the other that bored the hell out of me. I hate when the "will they or won't they" plot gets drug on forever. I get that sometimes it is necessary for length of the story and or movies. That doesn't change the fact that it annoys me. There were parts of the story I predicted in the beginning that I was right about. Mainly Darcy's motives involving Rachel and Marcus. I mean she was badgering her about their relationship constantly. It was easy to guess her reasons, based on her characters description. Loved the last three chapters. I was laughing out loud! Good beginning. Boring middle. Great ending!
A waste of time.......
This was a great read that kept me on the edge of my seat until the end. Just when you think you know how it's going to end a twist happens and changes everything! It's my first Emily Giffin read, but not my last.

I read about a quarter of this book and I really couldn't get into it. I felt there were things I was missing, and I hated Rachel's best friend, and it made me dislike Rachel for putting up with her.
This was not your standard chick-lit. It explores relationships on several different levels. Is it all right to take away your best friend's fiance in the name of love?
very interesting storyline.
Meet Rachel White, a young attorney living and working in Manhattan. Rachel has always been the consummate good girl-until her thirtieth birhtday, when her best friend Darcy throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy's fiance. Although she wakes up determined to put the one-night fling behind her, Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one guy she should run from. IN her wildest dreams (or worst nightmare?) this is the last thing on earth Rachel could ever have imagined happening. As teh September wedding date nears. Rachel knows she has to make a choice. In doing so , she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness. Something Borrowed is a phenomenal debut novel that will have you laughing , crying, and calling your best friend.
A nice book to curl up with. This book was a fun read.

This is a great book. I enjoyed it a lot more than Something Blue--probably because I liked Rachel more than Darcy.
Rachel White is her best friend, Darcy Rhone's maid of honor for her upcoming wedding. Darcy has always been the prettiest, the most popular of all their crowd of friends. Rachel, content to always be in Darcy's shadow, even introduces Darcy to her attractive friend, fellow law student, Dex. Coming in "also ran" again, Rachel is all set to be her friend's attendant at their upcoming wedding. Slight speed bump in the race to the wedding - Darcy and Dex wind up having sex and things get very complicated after that.
"Fluff" chick flick book concerning late 20-early 30 year olds, but, at 56, I cared enough to read the whole book, eagerly! Well written, humorous tale of friendship and love.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It's about two best friends, one is getting married and the other is her maid of honor. On the maid of honor's 30th birthday she ends up sleeping with her friend's fiance.
I loved this book - I was suprised at how often I found myself crying... but then, I also found myself identifying with Rachel in many ways. Thankfully I'm not in love with my best friend's fiance!
A fun and entertaining read!

The story line was good, however, I did not care for the writing style of this author.
I love this book!I counldn't put it down it is a must read!
I am sure I will break down and pay full price for her next one AWESOME
Compulsively readable. While I didn't buy or appreciate the premise of the book, Giffin handles it well. Her choice to have the affair start in the very first chapter is a good one, as it sets up the impetus right away. In ways it's also a bad one, since she then has to spend time filling in the backstory in later chapters. Partway through the book picks up steam, though, surging ahead full-force to fill in the pieces of Rachel's relationships with Dex and Darcy. Winning chick-lit.
EXCELLENT!!! I couldn't put it down! I can't wait to read Something Blue!
(This is from the back of the book.) American Chick Lit about two best friends - Rachel and Darcy - living in Manhattan. Darcy is engaged and Rachel sleeps with her fiance. Rachel knows she has to make a choice - she discovers that sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness.
This was a great story!
LOVED this book!!! I had heard tons of great stuff about it - and it more than delivered!
I guess this book falls under the category of 'chick lit'. It's not what I usually read, but I had won this from GoodReads and was determined to read it & review it. It's a quick read in my opinion, easy on the brain. I was able to follow the characters, though none of them are too deep, most seem like surface characters.
I probably wouldn't go out of my way to read this author again, but only because like I said earlier, it's not a genre I would normally read from.

Loved the book. It's a fun summer read.
funny and cute
One of my favorite books ever. Three of my friends have also read it now and also loved it. I enjoyed it more than Something Blue and Babyproof.
Loved this book!!! The sequel, Something Blue is just as good!
Rachel has always been the plain girl and best friend to the gorgeous and popular Darcy. But when Darcy's gorgeous fiance sleeps with Rachel, the problems are just beginning. Could Rachel be in love with her best friend's fiance?
Totally wonderful book! A little slow to start with, but then you can't put it down!!
I enjoyed this book, and liked the main character. The author did a good job of building tension between the love interests. It was an easy, light read, and perfect for a weekend chill session. At the end I wanted to read the sequel, Something Blue, but I haven't been able to get into it like I did this book.
Emily Giffin is relatively new to the genre, but don't overlook her. Her books have all been a great, quick read. I couldn't put any of them down.
Great read! You fall in love with the characters!
What a great book! I couldn't put it down!
A light hearted read but kept me gripped - call me shallow!
Great book. I'm very much looking forward to reading "Something Blue". It was an interesting turn of events in the end, but I sort of saw it coming. I loved it though, great read!
I loved this book ~ a very entertaining read ... finished in 2 days !! I can't wait to get to the sequel "Something Blue" !
I loved this book - Emily Giffin is a talented writer who has been able to create characters that really make you feel. Rachel White has a one night stand on her 30th birthday ... it just happens to be with her best friend's fiance (oops) ... this is a great story about what happens when you fall in love with the right man who is 'promised' to the wrong woman.
Fun novel. This book precedes "Something Blue". I couldn't put either book down.
The best book ever! Loved it.

Good story. Love the main character, got annoyed with the boyfriend, hated the best friend. Just like I was suppose to. Somewhat predictable.
Very good read! I couldn't put it down - I had to know how it would end! Enjoyable novel.
first time I read one of her books and thought it was great, I couldn't put it down, can't wait to read another one of her books.
Quick, easy read that kept me glued to the story throughout.
Great book! Can't wait to read Something Blue...
I was a little disappointed with how Rachel's story ended. Other than that I enjoyed this easy read.
This is such a departure from what I normally read, but I must say I really enjoyed this book. I found the main character likeable despite her actions. The story overall was entertaining and I definitely plan to look into more books by this author and the genre.
Would recommend for an easy fun read.
A romantic comedy of a novel, makes you laugh, cry, and glad you are not one of the characters in the book.
Very funny but also poignant story about both friendship and finding true love.
Good bath reading.
Excellent book. Easy read, I couldn't put it down!
Another great book by Emily Giffin. Her books are easy to read and enjoyable. In addition, they don't always end in a happy ending. Reality.... imagine that!
I enjoyed the second title in the series, Something Blue, and decided to try this one as well. The author has a good ear for dialogue and both male and female characters are well drawn.
Fun quick read. Chick lit but not cheesy at all. I didn't think I would be able to side with the main character but I did. Good writing that draws you in.

I read this book back in 2004 when i was pregnant w/DD. I fell inlove instantly w/this author! I gobbled this book up like it was dessert!! Loved everything about it. Technically you shouldn't be rooting 4 the fiance-stealer, BUT... u just cant help it :) I re-read it 3 times throughout my pregnancy, and every other book she has writtenand this is still My Fave!! Awesome awesome read. Love, heart-ache, backstabbing, bff's, many bars, secrets and sex. Cannot wait 4 the movie.
I have also met Emily Giffin and she is The Sweetest person ever. I loved her and she signed 3 of my books. She is just really great and her work just as much. Gotta try her stuff. Somehting Blue is pretty great too. :)

This was a really fun and quick read. I didn't put it down for a second! Great rainy day read.
This book is a great read. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is a HOT book and I hope you have never been in either of the character's situation before!!
LOVED this book. Be sure to read Something Blue as well. If you graduated from high school in the 80's, this book is totally a walk down memory lane. LOVED IT!!

Something Borrowed
By
Emily Giffin
Since elementary school, Rachel and Darcy have been best friends, with Darcy always outshining Rachel. While single Rachel is the self-confessed good girl, an attorney trapped at a suffocating New York law firm, Darcy is the complete opposite, a stereotypical outgoing publicist, planning a wedding with the handsome Dex. After Rachel's 30th birthday party, she knocks back one drink too many and winds up in bed with Dex. Instead of feeling guilty about sleeping with her best friend's fiancé, Rachel realizes that Dex is the only man she's really loved, and that she's always resented manipulative Darcy. Rachel and Dex spend a few weekends in the city together "working" while Darcy's off with friends at a Hamptons beach share, but finally Rachel realizes she'll have to give Dex an ultimatum. ~ From Publishers Weekly
Admittedly, I should not have been reading this book the week before I left for my wedding, but oh well, I liked it anyway. I have had friends like Darcy who always make you feel about 6 inches tall and it was very satisfying to read about Rachel finally getting back at her toxic friend.
I have very few complaints about Something Borrowed. While admittedly it was not a riveting story, it was still enjoyable in a chick flick sort of way. Giffin does tend to elaborate on feelings a little much as opposed to progressing her plot, but despite having to skim a few pages here and there the book is charming and has a real-life feel to it as opposed to a corny soap opera motif.
Something Borrowed is a fun, no strings attached beach read. I might just even pick up the sequel!
Four Stars.

This was a very good book. I found it a very easy read and didn't want to put it down.
Funny, charming book, very easy read. I picked it up from the bookshelf at the Wai Ola when I was on vacation in Lahaina, Hawaii, so I read it while sitting next to the pool, drinking hard lemonade. That always makes a book better.
Such a cute book! This was my first Emily Griffin book and I love her!!!
I absolutely loved it!!!!!
A great read, You find yourself really rooting for Rachel, although what she is doing seems so wrong but right.
Too predictable. I didn't like.
An amazingly great story! Couldn't put the book down! Even more excited for the upcoming movie. Highly recommend!

This was the first Emily Giffin book I read and I'm HOOKED! She's a fabulous writer. In this book, she somehow has you rooting for the girl that steals her best friends fiance. That takes talent. Just read it...and you'll see what I mean.
