Snappy Interviews: 100 Questions to Ask Oracle DBAs
Snappy Interviews 100 Questions to Ask Oracle DBAs Author:Christopher Lawson Almost everyone will agree that questions should fairly measure the skills of the interviewee. What makes this simple objective so challenging, however, is the tendency to inject bias into the questions. That is, we all tend to ask questions that reflect our own experience. We take our own experience and generalize it, assuming that one person's... more » experience should be applicable to everyone. In doing so, we unwittingly create unfair questions that depend on a narrow (and unrealistic) experience set.
The questions in this guide have been selected using this framework: (1) Questions should reflect understanding of concepts. (2) Questions should reflect actual hands-on experience. (3) Questions should not be based on memorization of arcane names or syntax. (4) Questions should reflect issues seen by the majority of DBAs of that skill level.
The questions in this guide are for determining general DBA skills, not proficiency in a niche skill set. The questions are therefore by necessity general in nature. We don't include questions on RAC, Oracle Financials, Streams, etc., since most DBAs would not be expected to have this type of experience. The need for performance tuning expertise suggests a separate classification. These questions are by nature more specific.
Remember that these interview questions are general in nature, but this
may need suit all interviews. Depending on your firms needs, you may
need to add questions about features or applications critical to your
company.
I have found that truly qualified candidates actually enjoy answering fair
questions, even when quite difficult. Most competent engineers enjoy
showcasing their knowledge and to their qualifications. Furthermore,
most people want to improve their knowledge and will want to correct
their weaknesses.
