The first book in a series is always the best, right? That's what I thought until I read the Smugglers.
The book opens with John and his father on their way to see a schooner called the Dragon. A beautiful ship, John is told, and he can't wait to be on its decks as it glides through the ocean.
A mysterieous man sharing their carriage warns them that the ship is christened with blood, and she is a wicked ship if there ever was one. The man is crazy, John's father thinks, and frankly, John does too. How on earth could a ship be wicked?
John tries to push the story to the back of his mind when they meet an intriguing old captian who practically begs to be let in charge of the Dragon.
Finally, John is on board the wonderful ship with the captain and three crewmen he brought with him. However, the crew is nearly as odd as their captain.
This book introduces one of my favorite of Iain Lawrence's characters (for the story's sake, I will not reveal any names). You will know when you read it exactly who I am talking about! (^:
