I used to love Thomas Perry, looked forward to each book. His early books like The Butcher's Boy, Metzger's Dog, and Island were exciting, had little flashes of humor, made you want to keep reading. The Jane Whitefield series had a great protagonist and edge-of-your-seat escapades. But lately I'm more disappointed than not. A SMALL TOWN is an implausible revenge plot without any spark of life, just a methodical slog that left me with so many unanswered questions. Where did Leah learn all her tactical skills? If finding the criminals was that easy, why didn't the FBI do it? Or if Leah is that good, why not help them 2 years ago? Why would the politicians knowingly equip her for murdering 12 people in such an obvious fashion? Why is there one fully-described sex scene in the book between a murderer and a racist? Leah is practically robotic and there's way too much text given to the racist guy's sermon. Okay - enough griping. Glad I got it from the library.
