Mende Nazer tells of her life of growing up in the Nuba mountains of Sudan. Her family showed her much kindness and love. When she was about 12 years old everything changed for her. She was kidnapped in a raid in her village and brought into nearly a decade of slavery as a live-in maid who was severely mistreated and never was allowed to be anything but a slave. I love how open Mende is. There were so many times her descriptions made me cringe with the detail of pain that she experienced on many levels, as well as how she was treated by others. This book was incredible! It is definitely a book that should be read by those who are researching human trafficking or want to read a truly powerful autobiography about what is going on around the world right now! There is a sequel to this book that I hope to read in time!
