I enjoyed this book more than I thought I was going to. My neighbor recommended it to me and I didn't want to put it down once I started it.

One thing that I really liked was that the author didn't 'pigeon-hole' the characters. Meaning that they were not your stereotypical characters who acted like 'this' because their life was like 'this'.

I'm looking forward to reading the sequel and would also read more by this author.

Slammed is a first novel for an author with little to no previous writing experience that was written initially only for family and friends and then was self-published on Amazon to (a surprisingly) great reception. After finishing this short book, I just don't agree with the majority of readers that this was a great YA romance. I think I was especially let down by the central slam poetry theme which fell pretty flat in terms of the poetry itself and the development of the slam poetry culture. When I think of slam poetry, I generally imagine great emotion and raw truth and sticky subjects. None of this was captured in Ms. Hoover's novel. Some young people in my life recently told me that the slam poetry movement is now full of "posers" with no real message to share and no real passion for the art. This book felt full of "posers." Even though their life experiences could have been the source of good poetry, those opportunities were squandered away by the characters in this book. Elsewhere on the web, Ms. Hoover has expressed her concern that there were not more novels with slam poetry as a central theme. I'm afraid we are still waiting.

Holy Crap, Colleen Hoover!

I'm officially a fan. I really became a fan after Maybe, Someday but I'm really really a fan now.

This book was bad-ass!!
I loved the heartache between not only the two love birdies but also between Lake and her mom. The character development was freaking crazy in this book. I literally didn't want it to end.

Not to mention, this book made me tear up like 5 times. Unheard of for me!!

I also loved how the idea of a poetry reading aka "slamming" was cool. Nowadays, a poetry reading is lame but Hoover made it sound so real and raw and, god dammit, I WANT TO GO TO ONE!!!

Needless to say, I loved the fact that Will and Lake had a little teacher/student interaction going on. Loved that shit. It added so much more depth and awkwardness to the story. Not to mention the tension. Oh the feels!!!

I bought this trilogy on a whim yesterday and I'm so glad I did because now I can pick up the second book. Read this book now!!!
