The author does not take the approach that all students would be better educated if all were taught to diagram. She does not aver that modern education is inferior to (allegedly) more rigorous education from The Olden Days.

Argh! I hated this book. Thought it was going to be something else. The title said it all. It's the history of diagramming sentences. But that's just it. It's only a history. It drones on and on with little insight to various tenses and parts of speech.
