In this, his first novel, Buchan paints a picture 17th century chivalry in his title character, one Sieur de Rohaine, as he sojourns through Galloway in Scotland. This then is a livid picture of the hatred and persecution rampant during the Covenanting. As in his other historical romances, it is replete with descriptions of the countryside and name dropping of places and towns that will send you screaming for a map. The Scotch brogue will often leave you screaming for a translator.
