Forget Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite -- Rusch's vampires are both seedy and hip, ambitious and gluttonous, and never averse to a little kinky sex. In Wisconsin, young Camilla works for the Westrina Center -- an agency that legally eradicates vampires. During a routine operation, she is shocked to discover a young child living with her vampiric 'daddy.' This event causes Camilla to think back to her own painful past and go in search of a long-lost sibling while confronting the fact she herself might be a 'hereditary,' an especially powerful sort of vampire. Meanwhile, in Oregon young Ben experiences some very strange consequences of his first sexual experience, which lead him to fall in with two European vampires, Mikos (who loves power) and Vangelina (who values control). Ben embraces his hereditary nature with gusto, while Camilla is more troubled. The showdown is inevitable...

I don't know if I really liked this book. It dealt with a lot of issues like, child abuse, molestation, addiction, incest, and sexuallity. It didn't end on a good note. It's message seems like there wasn't hope of recovery or a happy life if you suffered and survived through these things. It was a strange story. Plenty of action though, and you can take that how you will...

Different sort of vampire story.
