As Will Trent investigates a murder of an inmate during a prison riot, he talks to Daryl Nesbitt. Daryl is an inmate who claims to have information about the killers. In exchange for the information, he wants the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to look into past allegations that he raped and murdered several women. According to Nesbitt, the real killer has been continuing his spree of rape/murder for the past eight years. He claims he was set up by Grant County Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, who happens to be the late husband of Will's girlfriend, Sara Linton. Sara does not believe that Jeffrey would set up anyone. She remembers working as the Acting County Coroner during the first cases. She believed Nesbitt was guilty and is determined to help Will find the truth.

I'm always happy to get my hands on the latest book in this series. The chapters move back and forth between the current investigation in Atlanta and the original investigation in Grant County eight years ago. Anyone who has read the author's Grant County series will love being back with the characters from that series.

This book is just plain good storytelling. As usual, we have well-written, complex characters who feel very real. As Will and Sara are working the case, they're dealing with problems in their relationship which are exacerbated by his insecurities about Sara's feelings for her former husband. Will and his partner Faith's questioning of former Grant County Police Officer Lena Adams was a classic scene. Lena stirs up so many memories in this series.

If you haven't read any of Karen Slaughter's books, do not start with this one. I would start with her Grant County series, then continue with this series. Be warned, these books are graphic and not for the faint of heart. My rating: 5 Stars.
