One of my favorite Inspector Monk books. You get a real sense of the Victorian slums and how dangerous they were. Harriet, as nurse to the alleged murderer, Rhys, becomes too emotionally involved with Rhys but her logic takes over at the end. While Harriet takes residence in an upper-class household, Monk is busy looking for batterers and rapists deep in the slums of London called the "warrens". Neither Monk nor Heather realize that Monk's case is directly connected to the murder. Rhys is accused of killing his father but is so battered himself, he's allowed to go home under house arrest. Unable to speak, Rhys can't give any answers to the polices' and familys' questions. A terrific who-done-it enhanced by well-drawn characters and a Victorian atmosphere that draws you in.

Half way thru the series, has a lot to do with the nasty underside of Victorian life. Wowzer of a plot twist at the end. Warning for these books about William Monk, you should READ THEM IN ORDER. This is the order:

A William Monk/Hester Latterly mystery. William and Hester's relationship hit a critical point. The mystery reveals a truly gripping, tragic story.

At the end I was amazed at the reason Rhys Leighton could not speak but knew who done it. Great book.

IF you don't get bogged down in Perry's constant surmising of what everyone is thinking, then the story is a good read for its twists, turns and very surprising ending.

In the two series that Anne Perry authored, William Monk and Thomas Pitt, she builds the characters and their lives as she delves into their latest mystery which enhances her stories with an added dimension. For historical (Victorian Age) fiction mystery lovers, she is the greatest for a delightful pageturner.
A great cliffhanger from Anne Perry! An amazing portrayal of the differences between the upper and lowest classes in Victorian London. Women are being gang raped and beaten in a most shameful manner and Monk must find out who the perpetrators are. Meanwhile Hester has a patient suffering from such a severe beating he cannot even cry out. Is he a victim or a rapist? The few herrings (red and otherwise) will keep the ending as an amazing reveal in the last few pages! Highly recommended.

This is the first book I have read from this series. It takes place in England during the Victorian Era. It's a mystery. In this book, a father is found killed & his son badly beaten. Hester is hired to nurse the son while the police try to find out who killed his father.
