This was my first Erica Spindler book and it will not be my last. The best written thriller I've read in a long time. I could not put it down ! IN SILENCE is a very suspenseful story told in quicksilver prose.

More than just a beach read, IN SILENCE explores the prejudices and preconceptions that can fulminate in an isolated and insulated community. The deadly consequences born of a narrow worldview that puts one in a position wherein s/he becomes the center of the universe. Spindler examines how ordinary people, who mean no harm, can get caught up in a mob mentality, which reduces individual responsibility for acts they would never commit on their own. Readers may ask themselves, "If my life and the lives of my family members would flourish in perfect surroundings and never be threatened with crime or outside influences, would I choose to live there? And at what price?

To the outside world, Cypress Springs, Louisiana, is a postcard-perfect town where moral, decent citizens lead safe, wholesome lives. But outsiders, it seems, don't fare so well.
When journalist Avery Chauvin returns home to Cypress Springs after twelve years, it's as if time has stood still. Yet for her everything has changed - her mother died a year ago and now her father is gone. Devastated by her father's suicide and her inability to save him, Avery has taken a leave of absence from her newspaper job to come back and put his affairs in order. But in truth, she has come looking for answers. How could her father, a physician who dedicated himself to preserving life, have taken his own?
As Avery begins the heartbreaking task of cleaning out her parents' home, she discovers a box of fifteen-year-old newspaper articles covering the brutal murder of a young woman in Cypress Springs. Why, she wonders, did her father keep the clippings? Then Avery meets a newcomer to Cypress Springs - a woman looking into her brother's sudden disappearance and into whispered rumors of strange happenings in town.

As usual, Spindler starts out slow, then builds up to a peak. The ending is more than a surprise, it was an amazement

This was a good read. It is a suspenseful story and keeps you on your toes as you are trying to figure out who the bad guy is. Half way through the book it is pretty obvious that the bad guy will be between a few people but it was still a good read and I would recommend it to others.

Here is a bried review.....

The old adage, "You can't go home again," doesn't apply to Cypress Springs, La., a picaresque little town that goes to extreme-and sometimes deadly-lengths to keep the outside world and its corrupting influences at bay. The town's outward calm provides an eerie counterpoint to the struggle occurring beneath the surface, which makes it the perfect setting for Spindler's latest thriller (after Dead Run). When investigative reporter Avery Chauvin returns to Cypress Springs to put her father's affairs in order after his apparent suicide, she takes comfort in the familiar attentions of her high school sweetheart, Matt Stevens, and his loving family, who treat her as one of their own. It soon becomes apparent, however, that things aren't as they seem. For starters, the Stevens clan seems uneasy, particularly when she mentions Hunter, Matt's fraternal twin. Then she receives a call that leads her to suspect that her dad was murdered. Her fears are sharpened when a local woman turns up dead, and "outsider" Gwen Lancaster tells Avery about her brother's disappearance. Despite the overwhelming evidence, Avery's investigative instincts take a while to kick in, but once they do, she uncovers clues indicating that a vigilante group has taken it upon itself to police and punish the town's citizens. Most disturbing is the fact that Hunter, with whom Avery becomes romantically involved, fits the killer's profile. While smoothly written, the book's absurdly macabre (and somewhat implausible) denouement will disappoint. Still, once readers get past the sluggish first half, they'll be chilled by the town's creepy Big Brother rhetoric and pulled inexorably onward by the question of whodunit.

Avery Chauvin goes back to her hometown following her father's suicide. However, she doesn't believe that he would have killed himself. As she begins to investigate, she discovers that her father has kept newspaper clippings of a murder that happened in their town 15 years ago. Why would he have kept them? Do the clippings have something to do with his death? Did he commit suicide... or was it murder?

This book was wonderful, definitely one of Spindler's best. Spindler throws so many suspects your way that you won't ever correctly guess the "bad guy" until the very end. Fast-paced thriller that will keep you turning pages... I just *had to* finish it in one night!
