Sign of the Anasazi by Mark Lieberman is an above average novel centered on a fascinating archeological mystery: what happened to the Anasazi? The Anasazi were a race of people that occupied parts of present-day New Mexico around 800 years ago and then disappeared with hardly a trace left behind. The protagonist, Dov Bar Lev, an FBI agent, is drawn into the mystery of the Anasazi when a friends two kids are kidnapped for a ransom of their grandfather. At the same time, strange attacks have been occurring on the other side of the globe; reports of attacks in which the weapon is a blinding white light which blinds those struck by it. It turns out that the grandfather, Aaron Marcus, has stumbled upon the truth regarding the infamous Roswell incident of the late 1940s. This truth has allowed the US Military to procure a weapon of immense power which no other country would be able to match. When Marcus finds out what the weapon is, he is compelled to act in order to prevent the start of an arms race. I enjoyed this book quite a bit, although it was a little hard to follow at times. Lieberman has created a fascinating main character in Bar Lev and this has the potential to be a winning series. It does take a while though to figure out exactly what the plot is, as there are not a lot of clues until about halfway through the book. All in all I can recommend this book to those who want an engaging but quick read and give it 4 of 5 stars.
