I am about to begin student teaching in special education, and picked this book to read about a personal and family experience about a child with autism. Although I felt that there was a lot of information to be gained about the role parents play in educational programming, I couldn't finish this book. It was long-winded, self-important, and after learning about "person-first" language for two years, I cringed every time I read something like, "a sweet little Mongoloid..." (though I am aware this was at one point a "technical term"). This might be a good look at how special education/disability diagnosis and prognosis used to be, but this book wasn't for me.
