As a journalism professor widely known throughout the Carolinas and elsewhere once put it, quoting (and slightly misquoting) Shakespeare's arch villain Iago, "Alas. They have taken that which not enriches them and makes us poor indeed." Planter families all over Eastern North Carolina and the Lowcountry of South Carolina, they and many others, had long regarded Wake Forest as "their" school even as they now looked forward to astronomical athletic achievements, which, again, 'Alas,' did not come to pass. The work also chronicles the troubled relationship between protagonist Ryerson Goode and his half sister, Denise Longwood, from whom he has been separate since birth.
