Alex tossed and turned in his sleep as much as one attached to a bed and machines can. Images of foul beasts ravaged his mind. It had been days since he had seen that creature, days since the narcotics the nurses gave him worked. Every time he closed the lids of his eyes he saw that mess of a face, tasted his own fear, and wished he were somewhere else. Anywhere but in this nightmare, this too white, too clean, bright hospital.
Shivering he woke up in a mass of sweat and noticed that the EKG monitor was beeping loud and fast. Knowing that if he struggled to move it would only hurt him, Alex held still and waited until one of the nurses came to check on him. As the elderly woman walked into his room in her blue scrubs, he saw a flash of something behind her. It had been faint, but the outline of that shadowy thing was unmistakable.
He whimpered into the ventilator, but the woman thought it was only about him being frightened of the machines. She pulled a needle off of the tray that always lay beside Alex's bed and injected something into his fluids bag. Her crisp, grey hair was pulled neatly back into a bun and she wore glasses that pinched her nose. She had no idea that there was anything behind her, and looked like a no nonsense person. The seven year old knew that if he tried to tell her of the thing, she would believe that he was only dreaming.
The triple jointed arm raised up behind her head and slowly sank through the bun fading into her scalp. The woman made sure all the equipment that Alex was attached to was working properly, and turned to leave. She passed right through the chest of the beast, never noticing its hand in her head, or even something remotely wrong. As she walked from the room the creature lifted its arm again, releasing its hold on her and removing a slight wisp of red string. She would later feel a headache coming on, but would account it only to stress at work.
Alex remained still, hoping all the while he would be left alone, but that was not to be. Slowly the dark shape faced him and drifted over to the bed until it was looming over Alex's whole body. It's gaping hole of a mouth twisted itself in what appeared to be a macabre grin.
'Ahhhhhlllll..eeexxxx..." it sighed. 'Rheellaaxxxx...'
Slowly it passed its arm over the bed until it hovered directly above the boy's head. The arm dropped down, hitting Alex square in the face, but it did not submerge into his self. Instead it gored his face again, this time drawing blood. Recoiling the thing hissed at this strange event, and moved his claw over the tiny chest where the heart lay. Again it plummeted down, and again it met resistance. The monitors on the machines were going crazy as Alex began to have heart palpitations. Drawing in a rattling breath the monster then grunted and an air of quiet surrounded the two beings. Immediately the palpitations stopped and Alex felt better than he had in years. He drew in a deep breath on his own and relished in the feeling of freedom that he received.
The creature felt this intense joy and began to wheeze in an unmistakable laugh. It bent over double and began hacking while wheezing. After what seemed forever it straightened up and looked Alex in the eyes peering into the depths.
"What do you want from me?"
The voice that Alex meant to come out gruff was little more than a squeak. The thing replied with silence. Alex did not know what to make of this strange turn of events, and while he was happy that things were his own to run on his body at the moment, he was frightened because he knew that it couldn't last.

You certainly know how to deliver a cliffhanger. Sort of like: "tune in next time for another thrilling episode of..." You know what I mean? Hey, now that I think about it, that's exactly how soap operas work. Anyway, you're getting better and better.
