This is a pleasant story of five friends ready to leave Charleston after the Civil War. So few men returned from the war in their region that the ladies had little hope of marrying. When Charity found an ad in a matrimonial magazine, there was an ad for five women to come to Angel Creek (one of the unlikely coincidences in this tale).
The story is carried by the evolution of past problems Charity and Lewis bring to the marriage. Neither disclosed this info before their marriage, so they worried about their difficulties coming to light.
