This book describes a 12-session play therapy approach designed to meet managed care guidelines. Emphasizing ways to maximize productivity and efficiency in each session, the authors have developed sample treatment plans that make it feasible to achieve goals in a time-limited format. Conceptually, this play therapy approach involves a creative integration of behavioral and traditional concerns. Session structure consists of a Child's work portion that focuses on therapist-directed activities, followed by a Child's Play portion that focuses on more traditional and non-directive play techniques.
Effectiveness is enhanced by employing powerful behavior management strategies to prevent disruptive behavior from interfering with work productivity. In the latter sessions of treatment, the child's dependence is transferred from the therapist to the parents. This is accomplished by coaching parents in a simple set of "play therapy" skills as they play with their children.
Therapists who have read this book agree that it provides a practical and novel approach to play therapy. They also praise the book for providing specific information in a session-by-session format and for describing new therapy skills and techniques.
