A page turner, I read in a total of 4.5 hours. Interesting plot with many twists. Gratuitous sex scenes that don't add much to the plot were a little disappointing.

I just started the Ed Eagle series with "Santa Fe Rules" then this title. I was surprised that you could almost interchange one book for the other as the set ups were basically the same. A person accused of triple murder, a wife who suddenly moves money and disappears, a new woman comes on the scene and "steals his heart" one week after the one he really loves leaves. It was fine on "Rules" as it was fresh, but "Straw" became a bit much in its areas of duplication.

On the morning of his 50th birthday, Ed Eagle awakens to find that his wife has vanished, and his money has been wired out. Barbara (wife) went to Mexico, and Ed gets a pro-bono assignment to defend Joe Big Bear from a triple homicide. Turns out Joe might have something to do with all this after all.
"Stuart Woods delivers a compulsively readable novel of crosses and double crosses, featuring a shrewd criminal lawyer and his shamelessly sexy wife - a true black widow."

I've read several Stuart Woods books and have always found them both engaging and entertaining. Sadly, this was not the case here.

Outrageous use of hackneyed characters abound: Corrupt Mexican police chief? Check. Sexually-ambivalent Nordic masseuse? Check. Attractive woman married to a rich man? Yup, she's a gold-digger! At first, I was concerned by the lack of character development. By the end, I was grateful.

Compared to his other books, I found this to be a little too 'painting-by-numbers'.

This book is one of Stuart Woods best novels yet. Lawyer Ed Eagle wakes up one morning to find his wife missing, every single penny that he earned is missing, and everyone seems to be out to murder him. But why??

I had not read any of the Ed Eagle books other that with this character as a side player instead of a main player. This was a great page turner!

I do enjoy a good Stuart Woods novel, and this one, featuring Ed Eagle and his brutally scheming wife is a doozie of a read ... super fast to read because his plotting is excellent, with fun -- and funny! -- characters. Pity poor, but very smart Ed Eagle and his friends, as they pit their wits against his wicked, inventive, ruthless, gun-toting, spa-loving, decidedly nasty wife ...

Ed Eagle's wife leaves him, and takes his money. Takes two private eyes and the La Jolla and Mexican National Police forces to catch up with her.

This is the second book in the Ed Eagle series by Woods. I finished reading the first book, SANTA FE RULES, a few days ago and decided to follow it up with this one that I got online from the library. It pretty much is a continuation of the prior novel. Eagle has married the sister, Barbara, of the killer from the first book only to find out that she is also a killer and only out for Eagle's money. Ed finds out that Barbara, who is an authorized signer on his accounts, has pretty much wiped him out by transferring his funds to a bank in Mexico. He hires two private eyes to find her in Mexico and to coerce her into signing divorce papers. In the mean time, he draws the 'short straw' from a judge who assigns him as a public defender to Joe Big Bear who is accused of a triple murder. Big Bear finds out about a hit on Ed's life while he is in jail and later gets involved with the hit himself. The story goes on to the chase for Barbara in Mexico and how she seems to outsmart everyone involved while still trying to do away with Ed.

This was just an okay story to me. It seemed like a lot of the plot points from the first novel, SANTA FE RULES, were rehashed with the wife trying to do away with Ed to get his money and the triple murder with someone else possibly to blame. Most of the novel followed the two investigators trying to locate Barbara in Mexico with Ed playing a somewhat minor part in the story. I would only mildly recommend this one. I may read the next book in the series and hopefully it will be a stronger story.

This is one of Stuart Woods best books yet! World known lawyer wakes up one morning to find that his wife is missing, every single dime that he had made is missing, and everyone seems to be out to kill him. But for what? Must read this intense mystery novel.
