While the author does an excellent job relating the story of the USS Houston from before World War II to its sinking, and then follows the crew through their terrible imprisonment and eventual rescue and later lives, I was also impressed with how he tied it all in with events happening elsewhere around the world, and then related those events to the ship and crew.

So many authors seem to look at their subject with horse blinders on, but not Hornfischer.
