I was recently fired from my job and my wife suggested this as a way to either do better, or rekindle my interest in my job. Sadly, this book was a bit too late to save my job.
Ned Hallowell is John J. Ratey's co-author for several books, and since I'm a fan of Ratey's I decided to give Hallowell a chance. I'm glad I did.
Shine is a really good immensely readable book. It gets into some advice that goes against conventional wisdom about how to get the best out of employees. Things like: encouraging social connections at work, exercise breaks, motivating people with things other than fear (like encouragement) and encouraging people to learn. What's more, he backs it up with citations of various neurological studies too. In addition to all this, I recognized myself in many of the anecdotes that Hallowell used to bring things home.
Its not a very deep book and is aimed mainly at the manager that wants to get more out of people. Its also useful for an employee that wants to do better and maybe improve his or her own lot.
