Anne Perry is one of my favorite authors. It is an engrossing story. This William Monk adventure finds him in an unfamiliar and dangerous territory. Both William and Hester are locked in very dangerous situations that are interdependent and connected. The reader is given all the tools to solve this mystery but not until William finally stumbles on the truth can you put all the clues together. This was a more complex tale than most.

I thought this was one of the better books in the Monk/Hester series.

William Monk accepts an assignment from a shipping magnate to recover stolen goods. Lots of twists and turns. Starts slow, but becomes very interesting.

Written about a London detective turned private enquirer in the late 1800's. Deftly written and you learn about that area of the world without even knowing you are.
One of the best in the Monk and Hester series! Two separate stories that are intertwined as Monk seeks a murderer and Hester's clinic for destitute and abused street women faces challenges far beyond the mere disapproval of polite society, who prefer to help the "poor Godless natives" overseas but not those in need close to home. A taut exciting and unpredictable tale of London's waterfront and layered society almost 200 years ago.
In the two series that Anne Perry authored, William Monk and Thomas Pitt, she builds the characters and their lives as she delves into their latest mystery which enhances her stories with an added dimension. If you wish to get the most out of her series, here are the Monk books in the order in which they were written: 1990-Face of a Stranger, 1992-A Dangerous Morning, 1994-A Sudden Fearful Death, 1995-The Sins of the Wolf, 1996-Cain His Brother, 1997-Weighed in the Balance, 1998 The Silent Cry, 1998-A Breach of Promise, 2000-The Twisted Root, 2000-Slaves of Obsession, 2001-Funeral in Blue, 2002-Defend & Betray, 2003-Shifting Tide. For historical (Victorian Age) fiction mystery lovers, she is the greatest for a delightful pageturner.
I gave this book five stars. Not only is it classic, excellent Anne Perry, the ending bordered on horror and haunted me for some time. Brilliantly done!
This author has a gift for plot twist that intrigues me. I very much enjoyed this book. After my book club meeting this week I will be reposting it, for another bookie to enjoy.
