A typical English romance. Very good. A fast read.

In a display of what poses as wit in this Regency novel, the first of a trilogy, Douglas Sherbrooke, Earl of Northcliffe, tells his wife Alexandra that she is "as amusing as a boil on a backside." Unfortunately, he's right. Worse, bestselling romancer Coulter's ( Earth Song ) lame story is no more amusing. The tale begins when Douglas is dispatched to France on a secret mission for the British government just as he is to marry the beautiful Melissande Chambers. He sends his cousin Tony Parrish to act as his proxy during the ceremony, but the bride and substitute groom fall in love and elope. They return to carry on with the proxy wedding, making Melissande's younger sister Alexandra the bride. Douglas is predictably annoyed when he returns and arrogantly makes this very clear to his unwanted wife. He rebuffs Alexandra's attempts to earn his favor until she wises up and tries to run off; then he decides to keep her. To prevent things from getting too cozy Coulter resurrects the poorly developed spy subplot and has Alexandra kidnapped. Douglas and Tony take off in pursuit, evil is vanquished and everybody who is supposed to be happy ends up that way.

One of her better series! I loved Alex, hated Melisande and despaired of Douglas!

I'd give this a B-. Dated style. Good story, a little too much bodice ripping and breast fondling for my taste.

Douglas Sherbrooke, Earl of Northcliffe, is a man besieged. He must have and heir. Thus he must first provide himself with the requisite bride.

Alexandra Chambers, youngest daughter of the Duke of Beresford has loved Douglas Sherbrooke since she was fifteen. Unfortunately, it is her sister, the incomparable Melissande, he wishes to wed.

But life never ladles out what one expects, and Douglas finds himself wed to the wrong sister. If having an unwanted wife isn't enough, he is also plagued by The Virgin Bride, a ghost that is reputedly seen in the countess's bedchamber. Does the willowy phantom really appear to Douglas? Does she speak to him?

Douglas Sherbrooke, Earl of Northcliff, decides he is ready for a bride. He sends his cousin to marry him by proxy to a lady he knew in the past while he was an important mission for the government. When he comes back, he discovers that his cousin has married his intended bride instead and wed her sister by proxy to Douglas instead. Now it's up to Alexandra to convince him to keep her around.

Coulter is still new to me so I'm not sure if this is typical of her style. The book starts really slow and you have to get through Douglas being a really huge, emotionally abusive jerk. It is kind of the same for his cousin's treatment of Alex's sister, except she kind of deserves it. Some of it was hard to stomach but Alex's outbursts and toughness kept me reading. I'm glad I finished the book because Douglas does change and his family is fun to read about.

This is the first novel in the Bride Trilogy. It is the story of Douglas Sherbrooke, Earl of Northcliffe, who is a man besieged. He must have an heir. Thus he must first provide himself with the requisite bride. Since life never ladles out what one expects, Douglas finds himself married to the wrong sister. Enjoy their trials and tribulations while they find love.

I hope you enjoy reading about the exploits of Alexandra and Douglas as much as I enjoyed writing them. You will see them again in The Hellion Bride, novel two of the Bride Trilogy.

I have never read this book, it was thrown into a large box of books that I picked up at a freind's house. I am not a large fan of Catherine Coulter so I thought I would put this out there for those who are and would enjoy reading it.

Book and cover are intact although the cover has a bend in it. Not a crease, a bend. Great story though. Part of her Bride/Sherbrooke series. Don't you just love those racing cats?
