A stranger walking through the Ozarks in the rain meets a young boy returning from the local mill. The stranger asks about local lodgings and the story begins. Woven into the traditions, superstitutions and hospitality of the Ozark mountains is a story of love that transends the grave, redemption of misquided ambition, and a story of an enduring friendship.
The book has several subplots that make the story twist and turn like a mountain road. Beautifully written with a spellbinding story the book will keep you interested and sad when it ends. A good read for any one wanting a good story of human interaction.

A bit pollyanna-ish and preachy; but normal for the era it was written about. Dialect makes it a bit hard to read. It's a good read for middle schoolers.

My having come from a world where the pace is frantic in the city to settle in the slow pace of quiet serenity in the midst of God's beautiful seaside and mountains lets me understand and appreciate this story more than most I think. It takes you to a peacefulness that we all long for at one time or another in our lives and the author skillfully leads you into that quiet time of companionship and love. It's a good read.

Having just visited the Ozark area and Branson, Mo in particular this book was very relevant to me. Excellent book relating an accurate picture of life in the early 1900's in the Ozark Mountains. Story was attention getting and an enjoyable read.
