Loved this book. Read it first before going to Hawaii for the first time - made my experience there a richer one.

In this ambitious, literary novel, the author combines history, family saga, myth and mystical realism, action/adventure, and contemporary drama - and manages to pull it all together in a compelling, highly imaginative way. It's a story of Hawaii and it's children. The plots, subplots, and huge cast of characters make the novel complex and even at the end I felt some of the characters remained a mystery. But over all, there is a strong story line, poignant scenes that left me in tears, and some beautiful moments of writing that took my breath away.
