Comletely charming! I just finished this one and am requesting book two (Cold Clay) right away. The blurb describes it as "Watership Down meets Mickey Spillane" and a "cross between Twin Peaks and Fantastic Mr Fox". I'd add Wind in the Willows mashed up with Agatha Christie. No DNA analysis and no gore, just a reporter asking lots of questions around town until the mystery is solved.
