The novel is a picturesque look at Quebec around 1700. The rock? Why that is Quebec. The shadows? Aah, those are the inhabitants in the story. It is also an excellent character study, bouncing back and forth in time to expose their background and why things are as they are. I did not find much of a plot, but it is easy reading.
I have always liked Willa Cather. She writes clear yet rich. This novel was a little slow and nothing really really happens. But it's a great and interesting portrayal of a new town in the Americas.
