You must ask the Lord to make the subject profitable by the teaching of His Holy Spirit. He can make hard things plain, if we simply look up to Him in an humble dependance on His teaching. The first time Melchizedek is mentioned in Scripture is in the 14th chapter of Genesis. If you turn to that chapter, you will see that he went to meet Abraham just as he was returning from a great victory. I do not like quite to pass over that occasion, though it does not strictly belong to our subject. But there is a valuable lesson to be learned from it. Lot had been living in Sodom, and when the king of that city was conquered and carried away, Lot also was taken prisoner, and his family. Bera, King of Sodom, as well as the other inhabitants of that city, were also taken captive. Abraham, hearing that his nephew Lot was among the prisoners, determined to go and deliver him. This he did, and brought back Lot, as well as the other inhabitants of Sodom, and all their goods. Now, what I would ask you to notice is, how very great a blessing one person may be! It was for the sake of Lot that all the rest got their liberty. There are other instances in Scripture of many being blessed for the sake of one. If you can find them out, bring them next Sunday. In the meantime lay the lesson to heart, dear children. Most of you have brothers and sisters: if they see that you really love Jesus, that your greatest wish is to do His will, it is very likely that you may be the means of winning them to love Him.
