Sequel to For My Lady's Heart, possibly a bit more of Kinsale's signature "prolonging the agony" than the average romance fan can withstand, but very, very well written. Not for fans of light romance, yet almost too good to be termed anything other than some of the best literature the romance genre has to offer.

The followup book to Kinsale's "For My Lady's Heart," "Shadow Heart" continues the tale of the dark and complex Allegreto. As the front notes say, this story is a real roller coaster ride and you'll be on the edge of your seat to the very end. Not many stories move me to tears. This one did. Just be sure to read "For My Lady's Heart" FIRST.

Outstanding, dark romance set in the middle ages primarily in the principality of Monteverde. Disturbingly violent sex w/ sub/dom and S&M/Bondage overtones in part, but emotionally intense and gripping. What a tour de force. Going on my keeper shelf. 5 stars.

Follow up to "For My Lady's Heart." The pain/sex thing was a little wierd for me but otherwise it was a good story. I wish she had given an epilogue at the end.

Allegreto first appeared in For My Lady's Heart, a beautiful young assassin who seemed to have a will and life stronger than any fictional creation. I knew that I must write his story and readers demanded it but it took me years to understand him. He did not make it easy for me. Who would have expected that he would? And what I finally learned of him was not at all what I had anticipated. I knew it would take far more than any ordinary woman to love such a man, but even her soul and the courage to use it. Allegreto and Elena, like Melanthe and Ruck in For My Lady's Heart are not just characters that I created, they are people who took me on a journey into their world and their lives. I hope you also enjoy traveling with them.

I'm not sure how she did it, but Laura Kinsale managed to turn a story about a cold-blooded assassin, a young virgin and a bit of S&M into a romantic story that ends in true love and redemption! Amazing!
did not like the s/m in this story
really did not expect it from this author

The story of Allegreto, the young assassin who first appeared in "For My Lady's Heart", and Elena.
Although I seldom read period romances anymore, I still always check out anything by Laura Kinsale. I'm glad I did because I really liked this one.
Passion, danger, all the things needed to create a memorable story.
