This is the fifth, and final book, in the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. Is this really the end you say? Well according to the afterward in this book Moning is working on a new series set in the Fever universe...so it is only kind of the end. This was a very good book, the plot takes so many twists and turns it will leave you reeling and the story is nicely wrapped up in the end.

The book opens exactly where the fourth book, Dreamfever, left off. Mac is standing over Barron's lifeless body, mourning. Seeing Barron's body lying there lifeless breaks something in Mac and she decides to do whatever it takes to get the Sinsar Dubh. If Mac can get the Sinsar Dubh she believes that she will be able to rewrite the whole world and existence as she knows it. Mac in her desperation joins forces with the very person who is her sworn enemy, Durroc the Lord Master himself.
I am not sure how to write a review of this book without having any spoilers, but I will do my best. There are a number of huge revelations and crazy plot twists throughout this book. Just when you think you have it all figured out Moning throws you a curveball and you are left sitting there with your mouth open thinking, "Did that really just happen?!" Most of this book leans more to the urban fantasy genre, although there are some pretty steamy scenes in here too.
This was one dense book. There are so many players at this point that they story is almost epic in breadth. The book is told from both Mac and Dani's point of view. The Sidhe Seers, Druidic factions, Barron's mysterious group and the Fae all play large roles. We learn what Mac is, we learn a ton about Fae's long existence, and we learn a ton about Barron's past. Many startling truths are revealed.
The pace is pretty non-stop, this is a very hard book to put down. The action scenes were spectacular, but even more time is spent with Mac trying to work her way through the clues to solve the mystery behind the Sinsar Dubh and the Fae. If I have one complaint about this book is that we get to spend too much time in Mac's head listening to her ask questions to herself. Some of that could have been eliminated and the story would have moved forward a bit better and been tighter.
Overall a great end to this series. If you've been reading this series you absolutely have to read this book. You will get answers to all your questions, you will be surprised and amazed. Moning does mention doing spin-off series in this world and I am eager to see what she comes up with next.

I have to say, I just finished reading this last installment of the Fever series and now I want to go back and re-read all of them again. I simply loved this book and series. I was floored over how much of what I had imagined to be the flow of this book changed so many times. I like that - very unpredictable and entertaining. I do already mourn the finishing of this series - it was one of the only series of books that I looked forward to reading each one with a child-like giddyness.
If you read any of KMM books, this is the series to read (however, ALL OF THEM and fantastic and, as in a review of the previous book, I do think that you have to read the Highlander series first, if only for the backgrounds on some of the characters that show up in this series.
I will always be a KMM fan and will always read her books. Fabulous, KMM, I cannot wait for the next (tie-in) series!

I loved this book, I too will not give any spoilers because the ride in this addition of the fever series is the best so far. It exceeded my expectations and those who have read the other books should not miss this one. It has a surprise in every chapter and ties it all together, answers all my questions. In fact I am going to re read the series just so I will now understand.
A series I am sad to see ended as Mac is a wonderful character in a fantastic world.

What a ride this series was, though at times, it was slow moving and bumpy. I found the ending satisfying, though I'm not still not convinced that it's love between Mac & Barrons. One time Mac mentioned seeing lust and fury in Barrons' eyes and that sums up their relationship to me. I think my problem was that I was doing what Barrons told Fiona and Mac not to do, romanticize him. When Barrons says this to Mac near the end of the book, I realized that I needed to do the same.
Im not the hero, Mac. Never have been. Never will be. Let us be perfectly clear: Im not the antihero, either, so quit waiting to discover my hidden potential. Theres nothing to redeem me.
So while I don't think it's a love match, they are right for each other.
The twist and turns in this book astounded me; I didn't see them coming and I couldn't believe them either. The truth about the Seelie Queen and especially, V'lane, blew my mind. I wanted to kill him. I wanted Mac and Barrons to destroy him. He put her through so much hell. The kicker is that I liked him before this. I didn't want V'lane and Mac together, but I was hoping they could remain friends. Ha!
If it wasn't for my emotional investment in Mac, I probably wouldn't have continued reading this series. Many times I felt it was moving too slow, talking about unimportant details. A lot of the plot was dragged on, IMO. Sometimes I felt like I was watching Lost all over again. So while it wasn't the best series I've ever read, my feelings for the characters will stay with me.
ETA: One thing I wanted to mention and I forgot. The main thing that pissed me off about Barrons was how he didn't want to answer ANY of Mac's questions! Loved it! There were twists and turns throughout the entire book. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong. Then ending was perfect; and best of all, it looks like there will be more books in that world.

No spoilers here, either. I loved it. I just have to add that, if you get a chance, listen to it as an audio book as well...the voice talents were incredible, and made it even more intense than when I read it.

Some mild spoilers below, but I haven't given away the story...
Mac and Barrons's relationship finally culminates in a HEA of sorts, but Barrons being who he is doesn't get very sentimental. Barrons is after all Barrons. He still retains his alpha male edge. He isn't your typical hero. He has done some very, very bad things in the past for which he is not apologetic. I liked the honesty in his character. He's a predator. He doesn't pretend he's not. Once you understand his motivations, some of what he's done is understandable. I loved that he was wildly possessive and loyal to Mac. He cares for her much more than he has let on. I think most astute readers have suspected it all along.
Mac is the darkest and strongest here, but Shadowfever could have been about 100-200 pages shorter. The writing is not as tight as it could have been. The book is incredibly introspective. Much of it is Mac second guessing and over-analyzing things. "I love him. I want to be with him. Why didn't I tell him I love him when I had the chance?.. No, I don't trust him. I don't want to be with him. He's a jerk. He only wants me for my OOP abilities... I want him. I love him blah blah." Ugh. Make up your mind, Mac. She spends more time asking herself questions that she does talking to anyone else. She has entire pages where she's having an internal monologue. It gets to be too much. That's why I give this book 3.5 stars instead of 4.5 or 5 stars.
This book is primarily told from the perspectives of Dani and Mac. Would it have killed the author to give us more than one chapter from Barrons's perspective? There's a page and a half from his perspective, but that's it. We get answers about Barrons's background, the anguished thing in the basement, what Mac really is (shocking!!), the modern day identity of the Unseelie King, V'Lane and his past, what happened to the Unseelie King's Concubine, etc. I was satisfied with the explanations dark as they were although I can see how some other readers might feel the explanations didn't go far enough and/or that Barrons held out on giving Mac some of the answers she wanted. The author is apparently going to write books about some of the secondary characters so my guess is she's holding back some critical information so she can put it in those books. I don't like the tactic, but I'm probably going to read those books.

However, there were some scenes that struck me a silly and or pointless like the epilogue. I could have done without that scene. It seemed too much like Mac 1.0. The rest of the chapters were merely ok. I expected more scenes between Barrons and Mac, more conversations between them, but I didn't get what I wanted. I have to say that although I really enjoyed this book, I didnt get into it as much as the previous books. I liked that many questions were answered & many loose ends tied up, and even the twists were good. The thing that got to me was that so many parts of the book were SO repetitive. Its hard to be specific w/o giving anything away, but I literally skipped over several pages at a time bc it was just so......"what if this?" "what if that?" "Im so sad about this" "I shouldnt have done that" repeatedly about the same things. I felt like saying "OK, I get it, you were upset/sad/hurt/undecided/confused" but these things seemed to just drag on and even pop up again later for MacKayla to lament and ponder over & over. I would have enjoyed more story. Otherwise it was good. I will surely be reading the future books in the series. I hear there is going to be a spin-off as well.

It's finally here. And I loved it. Got most of my questions answered and felt a little sad when I got to the last page.
Loved this whole series. On one had I was excited to see the out come of all the characters I have been reading about in the past books, but on the other I was kind of sad to see this series come to a end. I don't want to give too much away, so if you don't want any spoilers stop reading my review here..... I was very relieved that Barrons did NOT turn out to be a bad guy who was just using Mac or planning on killing her. I was happy to find out he truly loved her.

What a disappointment. The first 4 books are fabulous. I raced through them like wildfire. Halfway into this book, I found myself slogging through. Was Mac this whiny in the other books and I didn't notice. Did she spend this much time navel gazing? The ending picked up, but not enough and issues I wanted answers to didn't get answered, leaving too many important loose ends. It was a good ride while it lasted but shoot me now if you think I'll ever reread this.
Do the whole "fever" series .. well worth the time investment.
Macayla has finally come into her own! This is the best book that KMM has written. After rereading Dreamfever I was unable to wait any longer for Shadowfever. I was actually very surprised not to be able to see the outcome for this book. Very surprising and welcome. I hope Ms Moning writes Drustan's story next. I think it wouled be very interesting to see where she takes it.

It seemed like it took ages for this book to hit the bookstores but the wait was well worth it. I had so many questions throughout the series and almost all were answered. My main question was, what the heck is Barrons? I was torn between good and bad throughout the entire ride. The shocker for me was finding out who killed Alina. The intensity of this novel was unbelievable, to say the least. So much was going on throughout the 600 pages that I was completely immersed in the world Moning created. The creativity was definitely off the charts in this installment. I just hate that it ended, even though it was time to wrap it all up. With that said, Shadowfever was, in my opinion, the best final chapter of a series to date. Looking back on the series, I want to go back and read it all over again.What a fabulous ride it's been!!
I loved this series, and the last book was very satisfying. Like another reviewer said, the pace is very fast, so it was hard to put down -- I read it compulsively in a few evenings. I loved the author's continuous challenge of the conception of what is right/wrong, and how you find out that most of the characters were not pure evil -- they were often motivated by something that I would not say is "evil", but is altogether human. However, the consequences of their choices were often evil! The writing was top notch, and I was very pleased to see on the last pages a little note to readers that there may be more to come...that made me happy to close the book, knowing that we might be visting this world sometime again in the future.

After the cliffhanger ending in Book 4 I had to jump right into this book. I was stunned by the twists and secrets kept. This one had me in its grips, couldn't put it down and read it in one day all 608 pages! KMM saved the best for last and a great ending to a tragic story.
I LOVED this entire series, and this book was no different. However, I did almost feel like I needed to keep a notebook at my side to keep track of everything. There's so many twist and turns in this book, it was hard to remember who was on what side at that point in time.
The last of this series. An amazing ending to the story. I am left a bit speechless. The character development of Mac was beautiful. You can look back at the first book and the change is remarkable. Inside and out. Her acceptance of Barrons and of herself - complete. The plot twists never stopped. I stopped guessing what was true and how it would all turn out. It's very odd, but I feel a sense of peace myself. And yet I want to cry. Not because it's over and I'm no longer a part of their lives, but more as a release from all of the pent up emotion I felt for these people as this book spiraled to it's end. To say that I loved it would be an understatement. This was storytelling at it's very very best.
Great series, for the back story on the Druids and Adam read Kiss of the Highland, The Dark Highlander, Immortal Highlander, and Spell of the Highlander. The last two are the best.
Finally we find out what happened!
The cliff hanger ending of the 4th book is slowly solved. I liked a lot of this story, unlike some of the others where I didn't like what the planet had turned into or even the whining main character. This book was a good read, but only if you waded through the first 4 books.

Wonderful~! Not at all disappointed and she leaves it open for follow up. I admit I cheated and read the first 3 pages in the bookstore and almost had a fit~! But once I sat down and read it, I couldn't put it down.
Excellent book! Great ending to this series. Can't wait for the next books in the Fever universe.
I guess it's my fault that I expected some GREAT ending to this series. But honestly, how could the author possibly live up to the hype and expectation of ALL us readers after 4 previous books? I'll tell you how, by answering the big questions and having the main characters grow and evolve and not regress. Unfortunately, that's not what happened here. It's almost impossible to write a review for this book without including spoilers...because to show why I feel the way I do about this book, I would have to include spoilers to do it!!!
Here goes. For the last four books, we've watched Mac 1.0 evolve into Mac 5.0. However, there were several instances in this book where her decision making was Mac 1.0 all the way. I mean, why would you think something heavily warded and chained would not be dangerous!!! Also, after being willing to remake the world and "sleep with the enemy" for Barrons, how quickly she went back to playing that Mac 1.0 game...."I love you but I'm scared to tell you or show you!!!" For four books, we've watched Mac try to take on the Lord Master and then here...WHAM!!

I liked that Barrons and Mac sort-of, kinda, finally expressed how they felt for each other. But the bad outweighs the good. So much of the previous books seemed irrelevant based on this final book. I wanted to hate this book - I really did! Not because I didn't love the previous four books but because I hate cliffhangers and mostly I hate waiting! When I first started to read the series I was under the impression that it was going to be a three book series. So I read the first one and about had a fit when in the middle of all the excitement the book stopped! So I waited, not so patiently for the second only to once again about have a heart attack when the book left me hanging. So once again i waited forever for the third book to come out thinking that ok this book will answer all my questions (can you tell I'm an impatient person) only to get to the end and discover that there are two more books to be written - WHAT??? Oh painfully I waited for the fourth book and the ending disappointment of not knowing the ending of the story. Finally, after waiting, not-so-patiently and starting to hate the books as they are not giving me my reader satisfaction, the fifth (and final book or I'm going to have a breakdown, I swear!) comes out. Hurray! I wanted to hate it for making me wait so long, thinking that after all this time it would be a letdown, a sad failure. Unfortunately, for my hatefulness it was not, the book was a masterpiece. The unraveling of the story was so beautiful, exciting and so full of suspense it made my waiting seem trivial and unimportant. My hate turned to love and reading satisfaction was mine at last. As much as I hate to admit it...it was worth the wait!
Absolutely incredible fiction conclusion. I was completely shocked at the turn of events in this novel and loved following every bit of it. More than that, this was written in the beginning almost as if it were poetry falling on the pages. It was a tremendous way of showing the growth of the character MAC and the weight of the world on her shoulders. Excellent series!! Very worth reading all 5 novels.
LOVED IT ! Like other readers, I had NO idea where KMM was going to go with this novel ! She had left Mac in dire straits after the last book - but this finished the series perfectly. It is not a quickie read, the series is gritty and hard-edged, and OH MY, this is the sexiest, by far ! I do not recommend reading this without reading the first 4 in the series - there are a lot of characters, and a fairly involved plot. But this series is totally worth the time !

MacKayla Lane AKA Mac, after the huge cliffhanger in the last installment Dreamfever, is about to finally get answers to all her questions. What did happen to her sister, who is Jerrecho Barrons and more importantly just who is MacKayla Lane and how is she supposed to save the world?
I have been enthusiastically awaiting the release of Shadowfever ever since Dreamfever's release. I am happy to say that the book was able to live up to my lofty expectations. I was a little worried n the beginning when things looked bleak for Mac. I couldn't imagine how Ms. Moning was going to fix the situation in which Mac had found herself. Once things turned around the book really took off for me. It was one revelation after another that kept blowing me away. This book had more twists and turns than the Indy 500. I loved every minute of it.
While I did feel that Mac and Barron's relationship finally came to the place readers have long waited for it to get to, I also was surprised at the way it happened. I thought Barron's would do the taking, but that was not the case. I will refrain from saying more because I do not want to give away anything. Suffice it to say, you will just have to read it yourself.

This is the best novel yet in the series. Loose ends tied but there is plenty of material for a new series set in this world. LOVE IT!
I love this series! I have re-read it a few times and each time I catch something that I overlooked the last time. Jericho is my favorite leading man (hero?) and throughout the series I laughed, and most definitely cried. I would recommend this series to everyone who like paranormal books (ah, who am I kidding - I would recommend this to everyone)
I wish I could say I loved it but I didn't. It was good and it wrapped up quite a few loose ends but overall I felt it was glommed together, too many characters, a storyline that went back and forth and an ending that just made me mad.

I died when I read this book. I was so excited I could barely start reading and I was smelling the pages and caressing it lol. In short it was a great book!!!!
This entire series is amazing. It gives such a vivid picture that keeps you on the edge of your seat and flipping the pages.Each character are likeable but each have issues of their own all at the same time.
I'm still reading!not one of my favorite.
